Afternoon all - looked at the clear bright sky, hour to kill so notunsurprisingly thought time to take Trevor out for a run but sadly on entering the garage, inserting ignition key and turning, I found no resistance in the barrel and cannot start the car.

A few quick questions duly result and I would be grateful for your collective advice.

1) Is this just a case of a failed spring or something similar in the barrel and will a replacement barrel cure the problem?

2)If so can anyone tell me where to source one from and what make, model etc was it designed for? - thought I saw GM on the casing.

By the way its a 1992 4.0 pre cat.

Kind regards in advance.

It's a standard early 90's Vauxhall part.

Many thanks guys - I don't supose anyone knows how to get the old barrel out do they?

I had a quick look but the light was fading and I could not see if you have to remove the whole steering head assembly.

kind regards

Yes thanks Ricardo - was hoping to leave the housing undamaged.

Having re read my question, I can see where you are coming from and will duly check with my local garage.

If you take of the plastic housing,at the top there should be two screws holding the barrel, chances are it will a one way slot head on it.

Thanks chaps - it transpires that it is the plastic hub section that bolts onto the rear of the ignition barrel housing that has failed - a trip to the local Vauxhall dealer and some £17 later and all is now fixed.

Wonder what the weather is like?.................

Exactly the same problem just happened to my 1992 precat. No ignition and no spring pressure when the key is turned. Did a quick search and found this thread - aint Pistonheads wonderful. Jollygreengriff, can you confirm the plastic end piece is a Cavallier part and can it be replaced without removing the barrel? Thanks in anticipation.
