Guys,
Ive been having this gremlin for months now and just cant seem to find the problem, can you help ?
I have a 98 500 and the niggling problem is when she's running at low speeds especially in 1st and 2nd under 3000 rpm its like ive put kangaroo juice in her, if I put my foot down she's good as gold. The stepper is clean and there is no problem at idle. It only seems to start happening when she's warmed up a bit, anybody any pointers ?

Is it standard or has it been to a “tuner”. Mine was smooth as a smooth thing until a “tuner” who emptied my wallet and messed up the car.

Not experienced with TVR, but have had similar with my Landrovers. Seen it when Main Dealer resealed Plenum & latterly when vacuum pipe for Cruise control came adrift. Air leaks cause symptoms similar to stepper motor probs (surprised its not mentioned more often..)

Had a similar problem with mine, turned out the connector on the AFM was corroded and gave a "corroded" signal. Have a look at the connector and maybe clean the connections.

None technical answer here, but when I first got my griff I had the same problem, no matter how much I tried I could never get the car smoothly at low speeds.

then some helpful chap on PH suggested removing one of the two springs from the throttle linkage on top of the engine, and it has worked a treat! Much, much smoother with the single spring.

Just a suggestion, as you can always put it back if it doesn't work and it's free! (my can of fault finding)

Hi Rafboy,

common problem, I changed tons of things, the only thing that cured it was to change to a green tune resistor (i then subsequently removed all the cats). The other option is to get a Mark Adams chip (although this didnt cure it, it just helped) you should be able to get a GTR for about £30 and you will be amazed at the result!!! Mail me directly if you want more details.

Surely 2P for a resistor, agree though.

Hi , Dude,

Im no buff, but I had a similar prob and found it was an HT lead touching and 'shorting' on the exhaust manifold. (?)

I had the same problem with my Chim, it was horrible under 3k but ticked over ok. It turned out that the airflow meter was wrongly set up and together with the addition of a TVR Power chip, the car is sooo much smoother.
Other things I had checked.
1) Cam, if worn they can cause poor low down running
2) Lampda's control mixture under 3K I understand, so worth checking.
3) Certain makes of leads have been known to cause poor running.

Hey Pasco,

Pratt is a bit strong don't you think?

I was given this advice on this forum, by another PH'r. It worked for me, just because it doesn't work for you shouldn't mean you have a go at somebody else trying to help a new owner. Half the joy of owning a car like this is having your own opions how they work, and how TVR should have done it diffently in the first place.

If you search the forums, a lot of people have made this modification.

I never have any problem, just keep 2L of water in the boot and chuck it over the starter motor, I'm too tight to cross Mr Beer's palm with silver.

Del, i will send you one, knock it off the next bill if you wish(do you do Rangie shocks?), anyway, its only 20 smakkers! Mr Pasco, i was up early so i could do my Figaro stereos and keep your wife happy just after Christmas !
As for throttle springs, i always ran with the two, not the three, the rangie has a two foot long pedal so it felt light, same spring set up on a Griff and it built up your right leg.
However, after a bit of work recently, my throttle did stick open and i span 180 on a duel carraigeway, bouncing off the rev limiter, oh the looks i got.

Griff boy,you are right theres nothing wrong with removing one of the springs to lighten the throttle action,i mean there is three after all,i will tell you the (PRATT) is someone who does not have the common sense to dip the clutch and switch off if the throttle gets stuck, and that wont be the one less spring to blame, but probably a knackered cable that the extra spring would not other come anyways.it does make the throttle lighter but wont cure kangerooing, two heavy springs are overkill.
