It's always a good thing to set the preload correctly and it should be checked if the heads are skimmed or the gaskets changed for items of different thicknesses. On completly stock engines the settings should be within stock tolerances as established by Rover. That said, there are masses of engines which haven't had the preloads corrected and maybe they all suffer from less duration/lift. You need to check if you have excessive clearance at the valve tip, I am assuming that you have a rattle or something similar?

No preload and you will expect to replace the cam and rockers within a few thousand miles. The damaged rocker shown in Bible 2 were the result of no preload being set when the cam was previously replaced.

If you were taking the inlet stuff off anyway it doesn't take long to check pre-load,
