To lag or not to lag

Gents,
I'm just in the process of thinking about lagging the exhausts on my 500 to reduce the temperatures and the usual increase in part life under the bonnet, but my question is does this in anyway improve the performance / power output of the engine. Or is this just old wifes tails

The people who sell the lagging tell you it does, and in principle I guess it's possible that it could in some circumstances, but in practice it doesn't make the slightest difference. Does make it quite a lot quieter though, and that can make it 'feel' less powerful/eager from the driving seat.
