Am fitting new Powerflex Poly bushes and have a problem with the top hub carrier bush on the rear which appears to have a 4mm gap between the wishbones. (visible on the right hand side, where the copper grease is oooozing out)

I am planning to space it out to avoid distorting the wishbone. Seems unusual as all of the others were spot on. Before you ask, yes I have got the short bush on the forward upper wishbone and the metal special on the forward lower.

Or should I be tightening it up and allowing the wishbone to be pulled in the 4mm ?

Gonna check with my supplier tomorrow, just wanted to check with our resident experts to see if you have come across this before ?

You help and experience is welcomed as ever.

Cheers Moose

Measure the other side, and I think youll find someone has levered/tapped the bracket out to remove old bushes. If so should be able to just torque up or drift back together (wooden block & lump hammer method).

I'm sure I've read somebody else having this problem.
Have a search fella, see if you can find it. I'll have a dig for ya too.

Both sides have the same gap

The origonal bushes had a fair amount of space between the hub carrier and wishbone as I had enough space to get a hacksaw blade in, in order to get the buggers off as the nuts were seized solid.

I was very careful during this process and no thumping was required (makes a change for me)

Doh, Sorry missed the hub carrier (its a bit late for us old faarts). Mine had big plastic spacers - which are a pain to position with the hub being such a dead weight! If you only need them on the top you are lucky. I fitted superflex a few years ago and didnt need to refit the spacers (wish I'd known this when I upgraded to the later uprights).

You've got it right, just that you're missing two metal washers that are std fit either side of the std TVR bush .. have they dropped out and you assumed you didn't need them? unless the wishbone ends were very distorted beforeheand (they shouldn't be) then they WILL have been in there .. go hunt the floor for them or get some new ones

Just the reply I was hoping for. Nice to know this is usual practice.

Should have a couple of spares, as I have replaced a bolt or two along the way

Cheers for your help guys

You could check the spacing between the base of the flanges where they are welded to the chassis to see whether they are straight. But I'm sure you'll find it just confirms what Joolz has already told us about the spacers.

All seems perfectly in line to me

The wishbones were a snug but not tight fit. All welds OK. Been having a good close look at them whilst in the process of getting covered in 15 years of crap

Happy to go with Joolz' verdict too

Now where did I put that homemade camber gauge ?

All Done !!

Too her out for a spin last night. Broke her in gently by keeping the back wheels pointing in the same direction as the fronts

All seems well, and that funny knocking noise seems to have disappeared

Now MOT friendly and after a re-torque should be ready for a proper test

Cheers for the assistance
