Engine Mounts

Hi all.Have just changed two engine mounts (supplied by Rimmer Brothers)and have noticed that engine moves (rocks)easily by hand where as there was no movement with old ones.They were perished and rubber had gone hard so i realise that new ones are more supple and there would be some movement but wondered if this is normal..Simon

Hi, I've got my 4.3 on ramps at the min and have just replaced my engine mounts. When you say the engine rocks, do you mean if you push it by hand or when you rev the engine.
If its a hand job (fnar fnar) I can whiz into the garage tonight and see what mine is like - although there are no exhaust manifolds on there at the min which will make a bit of difference.

Hi.I did mean when pushed by hand.My exhaust manifolds are also off as are most other ancilliaries as i am cleaning/repainting chassis etc.When i say movement,i mean perhaps 10-15mm where before it was rigid.(more sexual undertones.)Would appreciate you checking.Thanks

With headers on nearside hardly lifts 2mm up, offside maybe 5mm max!! thats with one hand pushing the plenum the other lifting the header...

Newish mounts quite regularly

I tried rocking my engine this morning Simon and nothing, not a sausage.
I had one hand with my fingers up the exhaust ports and the other either holding the plenum or the alternator.
I can't lift it or push it to move the engine.

Can I just say [fnar fnar] for the entire post

Both mine were completely brittle and breaking up and yes BB I did put spacer back,but only had one on driver side not passenger.Is this normal?So,can i assume that my bit of movement is ok?Did your engine move more after you changed them Mr Barreti?.Simon.

I didn't check the engine movement before I changed mine Simon. I just decided I'd do the mounts while I had the manifolds off.
The mounts were almost exactly like the before-and-after picture BB posted, although my 'before' were just cracked, not actually falling apart.

I have spacers on both sides but one odd thing was I had to flip one of the spacers over because it wouldn't sit flat on the mount and allowed the mount to rock on the bracket. It was all rock solid when I flipped it over. Maybe it wasn't quite 'true'?
(Yes, I was sad enough to mark and photograph bracket/spacer/mount before I took it apart)

I had to lift the engine a very small amount to get the new mount to fit to the chassis (attached to engine first) but I was sort of expecting that with a new mount.

IIRC 500's just have the one spacer, nit sure about the 4.x's

There has top be certain amount of movement otherwise things would break under load wouldnt they?

yes i only had one spacer,you will find the engine can move left to right in the chassis when fitting,i just lined mine up so there was enough clearence beetween the manifolds precat area underneath and chassis both sides,about 1/2" approx from memory.
