Time to wake up the suspension Gurus again
Discussion
Hi Guys
After my calamatous snapping of my Spax Shock last weekend, a very kind "Oggs"
has lent me his standard shocks until I get the matter sorted with Spax and also Westminster Council / Transport for London.
Two problems are
1) I am not 100% sure that these springs are suitable for the standard Bilsteins. Open spring length 242mm. Bilstein shock on full extension 203mm. Just checking that these are not different for the Koni shocks that may well have been on my car origonally.
2) How do you guys get sufficient compression on the spring to allow the fittment of the top collar. My spring compressors are the Mickey Mouse home DIY versions, and I guess there must be some sort of manly flat plate ones out there somewhere
I would like to use the temporary standard shocks for a few weeks whilst I battle it out with Spax / TFL, especially as it's a feckin' gorgeous day out there today, but if it's gonna be a long winded / expensive job, I may just have to bite the bullet and get some new adjustables (which is on the cards just not so soon after Xmas)which I should be able to fit Ok with the current tools allocation.
The Spax piston rod is 12mm. The standard Bilstein is 14mm
How do these compare with Avo / Protech / Nitron
12mm looks a little iffeminate next to the standard ones
Any input from my regular font of knowledge would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

I could of sent you the springs as well

Buggger !!
I had sort of assumed that they were going to be complete units I must admit (my fault for assuming)
How long are your uncompressed springs ? That should help eliminate one issue
If mine are correct it's just getting them on
If not then that job I talked to you about in Bedford is happeneing next Thursday, so collection may be another option
Thanks for your help matey
It would have to be a gloriously sunny day today wouldn't it. I was so looking forward to a thrash as well.
Now I'm going to have to fix the injectors on the Transit Camper instead.
What a joy

I have had various fun and games with Spax dampers over the years, the only thing I'm prepared to use them for now is mock assembly while waiting for proper dampers. I won't drive them round the block let alone use them for serious driving. If you decide you're going to use them, you're going to need some shorter springs.

My previous history with them in my circuit racing days was that they were good shocks
However this is the second one that has broken out of the four that were purchased by the previous owner.
I must say I am reluctant to re-fit Spax, and will be trawling through the aftermarket threads when I have a spare 3 weeks
Sorter Springs....cue Oggs (again)
Will my Laydees spring compressors work with the standard shorter springs ?
There you go, sorted with the right springs.
To answer your question about piston rods, most of the main players have found that 14mm piston rods give the right displacement to suit the 2" shocks and are certainly strong enough for the job. I have heard of 16mm rods being used but they don't dyno out so well on the TVR valving so I reserve those for the grasstrack and stockcar boys.
