No Reverse Gear

Went to get the griff out today and could not get reverse gear , It was fine last week when i put it away . all other gears seem fine anybody got any ideas or had a similar problem its a pre serp 93 car so a rover box . any help much appreciated . Tom.

Have you tried, engaging another gear first, then trying reverse?

Fifth then reverse normally does the trick on mine.
What's the symptom? Won't go into gear, goes into gear but does nothing, won't even get past the 'gate'?

gearselection seems okay on all other gears tried numerous combinations and feels that gearstick goes over to the right place but just wont engage , its a curious one cos all seemed fine last saturday when putting the car away in the garage.Tom .

Does the gearlever feel 'vague' or are you struggling to 'find' a gear? I don't mean how difficult they are to select, rather do they now not seem quite where they should be.
I'm thinking it could be the bush at the bottom of the gear lever.

No dosnt feel vague or different just dosnt seem to go in reverse that little bit extra to engage the gear (reverse) all the other gears go in no probs lever dosnt feel any different either , its a head scratcher , looks like HHC will have to have a look at it .

I would try this sequence: With the engine running, depress the clutch, put it into 5th then try to move it into reverse, if it fails to engage, put into neutral, foot off clutch, foot on clutch, put into 5th then try reverse again. This used to work for my V8S which has a Rover box.

If all of that fails can you get the car into a position where you can drive it forward, and then stop and try the above sequence?

Sorry to hijack but I have a similar problem on mine re vague gear locations and not quite seeming to be where they should be plus a less then firm feel to the gear selection.

Baretti mentioned a worn bush - is this visible or accessible to remove as this may be the root cause on mine?

Hi sorry to hijack but Barreti kindly mentioned that the gear lever bush might be worn - mine has similar symptoms and is this an easy job to access and replace?

Just been out in the Griff and no troubles with the gears did the 5th gear first and then reverse trick and no probs getting reverse to put the car away again had a quick look at the lever and linkage and it all looked a bit dry of grease so i will get some from work on monday and apply. thanks everyone for the tips and comments

Yes - thanks very much guys - looks like I have got a joy of a job pending then.

I occassionally restore early weight driven clocks in the quiet moments and well know that horror during dis-assembly as some partly seen component whistles passed your peripheral vision to disappear into the ether.

Horrible feeling because you dont know what you are looking for, you dont know where to look for it and even if you did find it, you wouldn't know where it goes!!!
