Make sure you know what car is sitting next to you.

That is the moral of the story.

I was at the station today dropping someone off when I heard quite a loud car. I turned round to see a black, LHD, Porsche 964 pull up next to me. He looks over at me revs his engine very loudly as a woman get into the passenger seat. Being a sensible lad I decided not to rise to the bait and pulled away sedately, and into traffic. Still along side me matey in the Porsche continues to rev the nuts off his car all the while looking at me and grinning at his girl. Getting a bit annoyed as traffic was at a standstill I tickled the throttle a little, big mistake! Cue more inane revving from the flat six boy. As traffic moves off I put it into first, pull away and leave it in first, suddenly all I can hear is Cherry Bombed V8. A quick glance in the rear view mirror, and Porsche boy doesn't look too happy. Off I trundle down the road on the way to the dual carriage way.

So at the next two lane set of lights he pulls up next to me more frantic revving, eyes glued to the traffic lights. Lights go green and thankfully it was dry and the 911 goes backwards in a cloud of uncatalysed exhaust fumes. evil

Point proven I back off and subside the speed down and he comes screaming past me, cuts into my lane and back out again to the set of lights at the bottom. At the bottom he looks over at me revving his engine again. Lights go yellow and he's off storming up the road. I wait until the lights go green and toodle off on my merry way.

So as above, if you want to show off to your girle, make sure you know what you're trying to out do.

I had a 911 a few years ago. at the time I thought it was quick. That's until I sampled TVR power!

I'm not dissing Porsches because I like them. But that guy must have over estimated his cars capability.hehe

I'm more impressed that you found a porker that wanted to play thumbup no matter how much i taunt them they won't for me
My last encounter like yours was with a Fezzer 355 GTS same age as my Griff. Would have been rude of my not to find out if the press hype about Griffs being faster than F355's and 911 turbos of the day was true. He doubt he'll be back for more laughsmokin

I am very VERY surprised blue.

My F348 Spider was significantly quicker than the Griff, maybe not off the line, but who can get 4.1 secs out of their Griff anyway? Certainly from 50-60 and upwards it flew ... and the 355 GTS is a bit quicker again yes

I know one thing not to race is anything Japanese as you just never know... it may be a beaten up 140bhp ... or it may be a tricked up twin turbo, boosted to within an inch of it's life 800bhp eek Way to much potential for embarassment hehe

It wasn't actually standing starts which, with the size of the treads on the rear of that thing I doubt I would have stood a chance. But from 25/30 upto 125 leptons I could'nt use full throttle or i would have had a new bonnet motif, and he was trying.
whether it was my better than average 308bhp (recent RR) or a tired fezzer i don't know, I could have passed him in that speed range, but it would have been recless to attempt to so i was quite happy to cruise :cough: up behind him whilst he was still accelerating.

Just wait til you get a Griffith that runs on all eight cylinders - a 348 or 355 won't stay with it.

It certainly bl00dy is if you include cleaning time, I am not sorry to see the back of those door vanes, rear light grilles and the engine cover! Not sure its that much quicker tho, post 348 power increase seemed to be negated by toys & electronics.

With a Griffith you'll never have to look at those fezza light grills or engine cover again let them look at your rounded unadorned ass instead.

Trust me Rob - my last Griff was in fine fettle and I had both it and the Ferrari at the same time for a few months - the Ferrari was leagues ahead on speed and sound! (de-catted Tubi hehe )

Del - yours doesn't count

You must be deluded as the facts and figures don't support your assertions in relation to performance - and you cannot get a better V8 sound than a precat Griffith.

Not deluded at all Rob

Plenty of people on here know what my Spider both went like and sounded like
a few of 'em have driven it too

Yes, the Griff (on paper) has the faster 0-60 time IF you could ever get the power down, but the 348 Spider with 320bhp versus the Griffs real maybe 270-280bhp, but the 348 has the faster top end ... what I'm saying however that in reality, you stick a Griff next to a 348 Spider at say 100mph and I know who my money would be on to get to 160 first

Don't get me wrong, Griffs are great cars, which is why I got another one, but a good Ferrari is simply awesome.

That is a very fair assessment Al.

I would add that its a quite a pain owning one; as well as all the infuriating admiration... you get, there are always the detractors to put up with as well. I for one did not enjoy the continual social aspersions and attention attached to Ferrari ownership ~ Tivs have a much more friendly image (or may be other folks just think we are all barking and treat us with kid gloves). TBH in any comparison the drivers capability (and dare I say mood) will make a great difference - if you had people wanting to race you all the time would you bother? I know my Chim is close to the F348 in twisties / upto 60 (driver would make the difference), but any decent high speed straight forget it (even Reginald Molehurst could pilot it ~ remember him?).

IMHO Ferrari data is certainly not as optimistic as the TVR data, so it is very difficult to compare.

I dread to think what an F348/F355 with mods ala the TVRs we are comparing it with would do. Just think the difference between a worn std Tiv & bushed / Nitroned Tiv is quantum. But this is a great attraction of the Tiv, they invite you to tinker.. You cant really do that much to an F series ~ its just too much of an investment (unless you are completely bonkers ~ hat off to anyone BTW). IMM its similar to comparing BTC cars with the family boxes they are supposedly based on!

They are all great cars and should be respected as such. Just remember the bores drive the Stutgart wagons ~ the buyers of Italian cars are prepared to take a risk

I'm probably well into the "barking" bracket these days.

However, I suspect that even if you could find some crazy individual with deep enough pockets to hugely mod a 355, they'd probably not make anywhere near the same percentage gains as doing the same jobs to a TVR until the budget got to be a significant proportion of a newer Ferrari...

The looks aren't to everyone's taste, and they aren't the last word in performance or handling, but I don't think the sound of a big V8 Wedge has ever been bettered.
