not including major mechanical breakdowns, how much does it cost to run a tvr griffith per year, i do about 4000 miles a year and the car would be used on the weekend.
i currently own a 205 gti 1.6, which breaks down about once a year. i know the petrol and rear tyres won't last as long but what else is there when comparing to a pug.

also can i buy a decent griff for 10K or would i be scraping the barrel.

if this has been discuused on another thread please post the link

thanks

fuel...........................1000 (for 4000 miles at £1 per litre, at 18 mpg, or 1 litre every 4 miles)
Average 2 tyres per year........300
Annual wheel alignment/check.....60

So, three grand, or so to run it.

You also need access to 5 grand on a credit card for when things go wrong.

You should also budget for 1000 per year in depreciation.

Hope this helps.

Hi Mate,

10 grand will get you a very nice 400/430, or a fairly average 500 with many miles.

If that is your budget, then buy the best pre-cat you can.

John Waggit at the sports and specialist car co has a really nice 400 in Formula red(great colour for a griff) with only 31000 miles and full history.

He advetises in Autotrader, so do a national search on Griffiths up to 10 grand and you will find it.

It used to belong to a mate of mine, who traded up to a 500.

Give him a call

Regards

Vic

If you have another car as a main car, you're insurance could be nearer £250 on a limited mileage basis. That's what I pay (3k miles a year).
Servicing could be nearer £300 if you live near enough a recommended specialist/independent and/or do things yourself.
Tax is £175 on my 4.3.
You'll probably need Super Unleaded, although the precats can run on 95 RON with the timing adjusted. Some 500s will too - others will not.
I had 2 rear tyres, fitted, for £140 (Falken FK-452s).
Wheel alignment should be part of the service, although admittedly at £300 an independent service is unlikely to check it let alone adjust it. Nonetheless it oughtn't need doing every 4000 miles, but checking it that often is admirable.

If you look long and hard you might find a decent car for £10k - but it'll almost certainly need something doing (if only because your priorities will differ to the previous owners). You certainly need to keep £2-£3k back for emergencies. £5k on a credit card is a wise precaution - make sure you have the means to pay it off other than by selling the car though!

the car will have to be parked outside so will this be a problem, i know ideally they should be inside but i have no choice, how good are the chassis on the cars and what sort of stuff should i look out for.

The chassis is the perrennial problem, particularly on pre-96 cars.

Be very careful........look at the factory press car in the classifieds for evidence of what can happen.

Living outside is ok, providing you buy an outside cover, and ventilate the car regularly. In my experience this also means leaving the alarm OFF.........otherwise the neighbours will hate you(but the immobiliser still works).

You should also have the exposed chassis sections brushed down, hammerrited and waxoyled.

I know a guy who lives in a flat in Hove with a Chimaera 500 who has been doing this for years, and his car is still in very fine condition.

anyway, good luck.

My profile lists costs accurately, averages out at £550 per year for just servicing and 'bits and bobs' exc depreciation, fuel and those all so tempting money eating upgrades..... and I have used specialists and not dealers...

So all in all £3,827 a year TCO, damn this pistonheads site for making it so easy to log the costs...!!!!... oops! Mind you, I don't know one end of a spanner from the other.. so could have saved a bit somewhere... cloud9

Fuel (446 gallons @ 17 mpg): £1,602 £377
Running Costs

Or a bit less, doing 4k miles p/a he won't kill half a set of tyres, I've got 15,000 miles or more out of my SO2's! And he needn't spend £100 on oil and £100 on polish

Hey Craig.......that used to be my wife's griff - although it was registered in her company secretary's name(Tony Carisbrooke Sutton).

We part-exed it into Mole Valley(for another griff of course) in late 2001 with 18000 miles on the clock.

Originally she bought it from Cranleigh TVR in Surrey for 28 grand. We had a nice plate on it.....S50TVR, which we transferred to our new car.

Be interested to know what it's been up to since. Was a nice car, very fast and loud.......we went all over Europe in it. Had one scare when the oil pick-up pipe came loose at 150 down the A26 towards Paris - sh*t....no oil pressure - but luckily had a TVR mechanic chappie in our gang(following in his chim 500) who took the sump off by thee road, put the pipe back on and we just filled her up with Magnatec and off we went as if nought had happened.

Be grateful for the update.

Vic

Lots of happy memories. Rosso Pearl is a stunning colour.....has she started to fade yet?

Really?? I must be driving mine like a pussy, then. My rears have been on there for nearly three years, still plenty of use in them yet. Track days too.
