ive just hit the buy it now on a 500 griff as i have this cash burning a hole in my pocket was this a good move i was considering a cerb but couldnt justify rebuilding the engine after every five hours use !

Hi Ian. Couple of points :

a) Why the roll eyes ! ? You've just bought a TVR !
b) Perhaps not a good idea to bate Cerb owners with the rebuild comment ....

Well, that certainly isn't a 500 then ... even though a lot of people would prefer a 4.3 it raises questions if the seller is listing it as a 500.

A TVR is one car I would never buy without getting it properly inspected. Also, get the right Cerbera and they can be as reliable as any other TVR. It is the Speed 6s that come with the most worry factor.


Well, it certainly looks lovely, but, it just doesn't add up. The guy bought it from a specialist two years ago or less, it had been in dry storage for four years. He has then had to spend £8k on it getting it into top condition. Means there must have been a hell of a lot wrong with it.

It needs a very good test drive with everything getting fully up to temp and also inspecting by someone who really knows what they are doing.

When did the 500 come out? I didn't think it was as early as '93 so either way, the seller doesn't even know what car he has!

At least this gives you a perfect get out clause with no negative feedback hassle if you have any worries as it's "not as advertised".

Good luck - depending on what you have bid it could be a cracker.

I dont think there are many cerb owners who have had engine problems ~ it would have been OK to say they were expensive to maintain well. You may be confusing the Speed6 & AJP8 engines a little, I would go back & edit your statement if I were you before somebody quotes it . I am sure we can all edit our comments ~ to cut you a little slack this time.

Looked a nice car for the year, if as described, but about the right price at this time.

As you posted on the other thread on this car, you can email the OP "who knows the car" thru their profile. An engine upgrade is not uncommon ~ but there are other differences - granted not so many on the early cars. However the car may have been subjected to extensive upgrades.. Ask & look.

to be fair to the vendor,it is more than possible that a very early 500 will still come up as a 4.3.TVR had the knack of releasing cars before type approval wa granted on a new variant,and my very early 500 chimwas down as a 4 litre car for just this reason.The 500's did come out in 93,and the earliest ones are given away by having pre cat gauges on the dash-a feature i wish they had continued with personally

My first 500 was registered in January 1994 and had the same dials as this one. It also has the 500 front nose which was only used on the 500's (it could have had the front nose replaced with the later 500 front end at a later date tho).

Just had a quick look at it,and it looks nice.The fact that the vendor was more than happy for any inpections is encouraging too.registered in sept 93 it will be a very early 500,good uck with it,hope i works out for you

Hi Ian.
Saw this car at Ians (Torquervt, Middlewich), last year waiting to have some work done. Might be worth giving him a call, he`s a bit of a nutter but knowledgeable and approachable.

Also, when I was looking for a Griff (c.two years ago ish) I remember seeing this car advertised at Sportomotive, a Lotus specialist in Salisbury for sale at £13000 or so. Rememeber it from the plate.

Personally, think youve done okay......however, never think youll have few problems, something always crops up! Enjoy....

pre-cat style gauges are black with black bezels,have red couloured sections for the 'warning' areas,and best of all the speedo and rev counter run backwards!ie they start from the 1 o'clock position and run clockwise
