Power Steering Rack?

Bit of bad news at this years Service / MOT on the Griff, failed on the Power Steering Rack. Been told they are hens teeth as it's one of the few TVR specific parts on the car. A few specialists have said the only option is to get it reconditioned but even then been quoted upwards of £250 by a number of places.

Anybody got any advice of experience of this themselves (it's a '98 500). Kinda limited really cos it has effectively now failed an MOT and obviously have to have it off the car to be recon'd but thought I'd ask the question anyway.

Whats the cause of the MOT failure,leaks,excess play in the track rod arms?

May I suggest power steering services, they advertise exchange TVR racks for 140 quid contact them 0208-853-3343
They also will come and pick the old one up and press a new one into your hands, providing the old one is off the vehicle

Sure are... a mate of mine (I won't name him) .. has rack on his car seems to be unrecognisable, he tried to exchange it.... no one wants to do PX on it. He has been hunting high and low to find a replacement.

I'll defo give them a try on Monday morning! They sound brilliant.

The rubber sleeves were full of fluid as it's leaking from inside the rack, guessing seals or summat gone inside.

Wasn't so much the £250 (although could do without it!) but to have it reconn'd, it was taking a week to 10days with obviously the car kicking about the garage. Mechanic is already going out of his way to help so it was a pain to have the car in his way for so long.

That's brilliant though, I'll give these guyys a call Monday. Thanks very much for the replies guuys.

just check it over before you fit it,in the past thay have made such stupid mistakes,like leaving the end body bolts loose on a granada unit(how dangerous is that)another ford rack that was built so badly the steering wheel had 1" of play at the steering wheel with loose hydraulic fitting,numerous taxi powered steering boxes leaking like sieves(dragged torn seals)you know rebuilding steering racks/boxes is not rocket science,but that was years back maybe they improved, i wouldent know i stopped using them years ago(waisted my time & labour which i could not reclaim)i feel its only right to be honest.
