500 Rev limiter

Can anyone tell me where my 94 500 HC rev limiter should cut in. I dont know how accurate it is. It jumps about quite a bit on tickover.

As far as I understand it, the rev limiter only limits the maximum revs.

For idle problems, one of the first places to look is the stepper motor. Remove it and give it, a good clean. Also clean the seat inside the hole it screws into.

I'm sure if you do a search on here for stepper motor you'll have more than enough information as to its location/operation etc.

It had a new stepper motor shortly before I took ownership of the car. Tickover seems fine, if a little fast. The rev counter is probably at fault.
I just seemed a little concerned when my rev limiter cut in at 5500rpm yesterday when I gave it beanz. Being new to TVRs this seems quite low. But looking at the dyno printouts posted on here, it appears to be all over by then anyway on standard and mildly tuned cars.

I've had a couple of chimps and two griffs now and they all seem to vary on where the limiter kicks in. Its around 5500 to 6000.

That's true, mine only gains 4 bhp from 5000 - 5500 rpm.

Unless you're into out and out racing, its always preferable for the rev counter to cut in a tad early than a tad (too) late

Rev limit SHOULD be 5850 rpm.


Most after market chips are set between 6250 - 6500

are you sure? The standard 500 rev limiter is normally set to 6250

Geared at 27mph per k revs in top means limited at 5850 it won't even make it to 160!

And mine certainly went to 6000 revs at least yesterday when I was giving it an airing!
