Alternator Part Number

Hi
I believe the one of the bearings to be on the way out on my alternator. I've got the part number as LRA517, the car is a precat. Is it possible to put a higher output alternator on or do I risk frying the regulator? Spuiggly amps are a 'black art' to me.

The regulator is part of the alt? The alt is made in various outputs of 30A thru 100A IIRC. Your wiring is more likely to e the limiting factor.

TBH the 70A is probably plenty big enough - the early cars dont have so many electrical devices to power.

output is irrelevant (so long as its equal to or more).

as has been said, the later cars with AC Heated seats had 100a alternators. Wiring etc was the same.

a higher ampage alt will power your car easier, the car will still only draw the current it needs, as before.
ie no dpping lights when the fans cut in. no need to go mad, more amps = more money.

Thanks for the advice you two, went to my local car sparky who had a slightly uprated one on the shelf. Fitted to the car by 9.30am, passed MOT by 11am....
