Well, I've developed the dreaded ticking, and can see where the manifold gasket has blown (500HC - n/s rear)
Couple of questions please
1) wheres best to source new ones - are they standard off the shelf items?
2) how long would a good mechanic take to do one side, assuming no hiccups?
3) does the manifold need to be split at the joint to the cats and is there a gasket/seal required there?

Cheers for any advice...

RPI do some very good twin metal composite gaskets which are the ones I use. TVR Car Parts are offering an embossed version which is allegedly even better and I believe are the same sort than Land Rover used originally.

It will probably take an experienced fitter about an hour a side, but it's a right pita to get at them and if he isn't used to these engines it will probably take longer. Consider getting a set of ARP K-headed manifold bolts when you reassemble, the heads are smaller and make access a *lot* easier, you can get a ratchet ring spanner on most of them.

After a lot of failed gaskets recently, just when i thought i would never be rid of the problem,i finally seem to have found some really good ones.I got mine from Clever Trevor, and they do look very good quality indeed. Both sides are metal, sandwiching the composite inner, and the port holes are also lined completely with metal to prevent the inner from burning, which was what i seemed to be getting previously.
To top it all the price was also very reasonable, infact less than most of the others i tried previouslythumbupall round from me.

Just had mine done last service, cost of gaskets was £21.52 and labour 4 hrs, but that included removing 2 no broken studs from the head, make good of threads, reinstall and test.

Couldnt check www.clever-trevor.net as he's exceded his bandwith for the part pricing.

You could try dropping this chappy an email. www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/profile.asp?h=0&memberId=23527
He sometimes has ads on PH or Ebay selling the gaskets. I've had a couple of sets from Ian now and they seem brilliant - well, to look at at any rate. I can't say vouch for the longevity because the cars only done about 100 miles since I fitted them.
