Great advice Uncle Fester but I think Wildfire's problem was more basic than that i.e. getting the Griffith through the opening into the garage not avoiding clobbering something once inside. Maybe a special giant lubricated funnel!

You could alway paint the doorframe/wall of the garage bright red so you can see it in your rear view mirrors. Or you could fix tram rails to the floor (ever been in one of those car wash places?)
Failing that you could make the door opening wider, oh hang on you just tried that....
Just getting me coat now.
Serious mode - Sorry to hear you scraped the car, i did a similar thing some years back and i was fuming for weeks over it.
Well car is booked in, excellent quote considering the quality of the work which is first rate. Basically I have one car's length in front of the car then a row of parked cars which are parked at an angle. If I want to get in I need to use one of 3 bays. Unfortunately only the most arkward one was available, hence the aid of the gf. So it's a 2.5" x 1.5" scrape, booked in for May once I get paid!
I am now looking at installing parking sensors to prevent any further mishaps!

Oops, I should have said to also attach two pieces of rope to the inside of the up & over door. When the door is open they hang to mark the doorframe.
I don’t think parking sensors will do what you want. They tend to be ok for telling a big gap is getting smaller. But when you need to use all the available room and be within a few millimetres of a wall, no good, especially if the wall is to the side of the car.
I was thinking about getting a parking aid myself. Has anyone else tried this one?

I had a bit of carpet on the wall to protect the doors but decided I wanted something offering a bit more cushion.
After trawling the web looking for bumber type product and not wanting to fork out £70 for some industrial fork lift type wall protectors I found the perfect answer.
Central heating pipe insulation. Bought 2 meters of insulation for 22mm pipe which cost abou £2. Cut it in half lengthways to give me two semi-circular cross section lengths and glued them on the garage wall with no more nails at the height of the longest part of the door.
