I would hazard a guess that this was an early, maybe even pre release, price list and that they were intending to make two types of roof.
1. The roof we have I would call a targa as you can leave the rear section raised and the centre panel comes out as a single unit
2. A full folding roof that was entirely made of cloth that stayed on the car would I imagine be classed as a convertible.

Or maybe what we have is the convertible and the Targa would have had a fixed, solid rear section with a rigid window?

I'm not trying to create any definitions here, only my thoughts, no knowledge as to it being true or otherwise.

Well this is what the Wikki wealth of knowledge has to say on the subject ....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Targa_to

Wikki said:
Targa top, targa for short, is a semi-convertible car body style with a removable roof section and a full width roll bar behind the seats. The rear window can be fixed or removable, making it a convertible.

I guess Griffs/Chims are not traditional rag top convertibles nor are they true targa tops either... just somewhere in between, the best of both worlds.

But then.... when have TVR's ever been classed as normal or conventional..

Who wants normal anyway ?!?!?! Mr. normal drives a Ford or a Vauxhall....

Whoops !!!

Targa invented by TRiumph - copied and claimed as their own by Porsche.

The Griffith was a mixture of convertable and targa - conga?

Hi Markh

Not quite.

The Surrey Top was the collapsible frame and PVC cover which could be used when the solid lid was left at home in the garage.

A modern day version of the Surrey Top would be popular with Chimaera and Griffith owners.

Jay

PS I think the name Targa came from the Targa Florio - I assume that Triumph must have used their removable top on Competition TR4s entered in this event

Your half way there Jay!It was porsche who coined the 'targa' name, after their success in the Targa Florio.Triumphs roof was never officially a 'targa' by name, infact,i think Porsche had/have the legal hold on the term.
If only due to the Porsche connection,i think it would be criminal to refer to the Griff roof as a targa!hehe.

The definitive answer is that the Griffith is a convertible and not a Targa. This must simply have been an idea someone at TVR had which never materialised.
