Cylinder liners......
Discussion
Story so far....Griff makes a rattling type noise in January this year, takes it to those nice chaps at Automedon (collected actually). Also books in for 12k service, waxoil and new hood along with a bit of paintwork possibly.
Thought it to be one of following at various times-rockers/followers/camshaft but this week looks like new liners.
Annoying thing is this;engine was rebuilt at V8D 12k or so ago with tophat liners, steel assemblies etc etc. All top stuff, I believe.
Sorry to go on but has anyone else had this type of thing occur so soon after a "quality" rebuild? Car has been well maintained/looked after no abuse etc at all....and please note I`m not having a bash at either outfits just be interested to know of anyone elses similar probs!! Oh, and I`m missing the bl88dy thing although after I spoke to Dave this morning was all ready to sell it!
Sorry to go on....
Dave.

What makes you think it's the liners as opposed to something in the top end? It's an unheard for a top hat liner to fail so I doubt the liner has moved or anything like that. Top hats are the fix to replace the dodgy liners that the stock engine may have had. When the engines apart you may find something else wrong but I'd be surprised if it were a liner.

Cheers, interesting to know...car is with Automedon and I do trust them, I too think the answer lies elsewhere but i`m no mechanic and I dont want to cast too much doubt on Dave/Colin as I`ve left it up to them to sort! Sound (as I remember it-not heard/seen car since it was collected end of Jan) like a tinny rattle although not continuosly, sounds like its coming from the top end.

Hi describe the noise and when it happens
Only heard it a few times really and then only on tickover/slight accelleration. Tinny type of rattle, checked manifold etc myself before it was collected so not that. And no, not pinking either.
Sorry took so long to reply and appreciate responses guys!
Dave.
Me neither, think the guys at Automedon need to strip top end down if they havent already done so although Dave said he`s already ordered the liner.
I know the guys will do top job and there were other things being sorted just missing car and feeling bit frustrated with the wait, I think. And I know they are busy....

Definately no coolant loss/overheating probs.......will speak to Automedon end of next week see if theyve come up with anything. Generally not an impatient geezer but missed all the good weather etc, just looking forward to getting it back! Appreciate the comments, kinda confirming some of my own thinking, I guess!

Dont understand how a top hat liner can move...Yes and if it is why are you not loosing coolant i would love to know how you diagnois a tapping sound to a loose liner:scratchin:

Have you got wet liners then Simon?
Dave
Not that simple Spend, you would loose fire ring area on gasket if liner dropped which would not aid in gas seal
you at it again Spend?i think you like having a pop at me

Having dealt the guys at V8D previously for full engine work, I would be extremely surprised if it was the liners, or any fault of theirs and the rebuild. As already said the top liners are 'the fix' for liners moving on this type of engine, how they can move is difficult to understand.
If it turns out to be a problem with the engine as opposed to a failure of a component, gasket, manifold, rocker etc then I would approach V8D as I have no doubt they would stand by their workmanship and put right what is reasonable, although I would be surprised if this were necessary.

Yeah, I realise they have superb reputation, no question but the car is at Automedon and really do not want to mess em about either, as I`ve indicated I have found them very helpful in the past and I`m sure they`ll come up with the goods, so to speak, just getting a little frustrated with the wait and diagnoses (that word again...).
When V8D did the work, they supplied new block, T/H reliners, rings/shells, steel rocker ass.,MC1 camshaft and new lifters along with general rebuild and polished crankshaft, phew! This was done three years back and car has covered about 12-14k since, has been serviced at Torque RVT (last year) and Gorners (main dealer along with the main dealer bill...) year before. Gorners had car for 5 weeks waiting on......ss brake hoses! Had top service, must say, from Automedon during the last year or so. Prior to this, Joospeed/peninsula and regularly (according to the records/reciepts from new) HHC before these under previous ownership. Oh, no abuse, no trackdays and well looked after. Able only to drive at weekends usually due to working away.
Sorry to ramble, gives a little background!
Dave.
