headlamp stickers for a modified set of headlamps
Discussion
I am going to alter my headlights ASAP. The following is the result of my research on here, talking to owners who have conversions and people who supply conversions.
You don’t say if your headlights are behind the Perspex in a replacement pod, or if they are the Zertec type with that glassed in and the lenses exposed.
Some of those conversions have a straight symmetrical beam. These need nothing doing as there is no deflection. If you are going abroad frequently for short trips, these are the best choices. No hassle ever, but you do loose the nearside curb illumination, but still better than standard. If you are unsure what you have then take it somewhere dark and check. Also call the suppliers/installers and ask. Do you have any fitting instructions that came with them?
Others have an asymmetric beam that normally illuminates the left curb.
Of this type, some have the ability to rotate the light unit in its mounting. This is a fixed amount of rotation, about 30 degrees IIRC between two stops. This has the effect of lowering the beam cut off on the left and raising it on the right. Thus the right curb and not the left is illuminated. This gives you lights correct for LHD or RHD, but you have to get the covers inside the wheel arches off every time you go abroad and come home. These are the best for long, but infrequent continental drives.
Some of the Zertec type conversions have the ability to do the rotating adjustment, as above, from the front, thus no need to remove the wheel arch hatches.
Some asymmetric types don’t have the adjustment facility described above. They are just like the normal lights, except they are bright enough to matter. AFAIK the sticking of masks on the Perspex covers is a token gesture.
Personally, I prefer the appearance of the original lights. What I am after is either a symmetrical beam lens that could replace the original and then fit a HID kit.
The ultimate would be a way to rotate an asymmetrical lens in front of an HID kit, but without the inconvenience of doing the wheel arch hatches every time. I have a few prototype ideas for this but it’s not yet at the top of my ‘to do’ list.
