Hi, been searching for the same problem, Started up the griff 500 and it sounded like the engine had gone, turned it off straight away to find the starter motor still cranking, only way to stop it was to disconnect the battery. connected it back up and it stopped, imagine the neighbours relief at 5.30 in the morning.

I think the car a modwise hot start relay wired in, it looks the same, when I tried to start it again, nothing happened and the inline fuse went by the relay.

Has this happened to anyone? any ideas what is the cause? Starter or pre engage solenoid.

Sounds very like a sticky solenoid on the starter. The feed from the ignition switch throws the starter solenoid which engages the gear and makes contact to spin the motor.
If the solenoid stuck, then contact would continue as the main live feed comes straight from the battery to the starter. Its a bit unusual but not unknown. Scary though!
Replacement starter motor is the answer.

Tap the Starter motor with a "technical Adjuster" may free it up for a while, but as TW says it a new starter if the solenoid has started to stick.

Just taken the motor out and connected it to another battery and the solenoid flick the gear out, the battery is also good on my car, what checks or readings should I be getting at the terminals to the solenoid?

Sounds like your hot start jiggerypokery may be cooked, you can always rig a starter button to the spade on the starter to check.

Looks like it may have been the ignition switch sticking on giving a permanent feed to the starter solenoid even when the key had been turned back and taken out. Ive purcussed it with a knocking stick and its come good.

Anyone know where to get a replacement. the part no. on the back is 90 052 497/498

Which is what gave you the pesky 100a fuse.... KISS IMHO. Real LR's are a thing of beauty due to their simplicity - RR's have just too much complexity for their own good!

Not sure what part it is... probably Vauxhall Victor or Lada Niva or something similar hehe
You could give the ignition barrel a good squirt of a decent lubricant. That may cure your problem for some time.

Vauxhall - pretty common across quite a few models IIRC.
