Hi,

A friend of mine has been trying to insurance a Chim he is interested in. The car is a 4.0l L Reg, worth about £8k.

Get ready for this, 33 years old, professional, full no claims (7+yrs), 'normal' location, no convictions, no bans, no accidents.....

....cheapest quote so far - £3200!!!!!

This is the cheapest he can get, A-Plan, Classicline are requiring previous performance car experience.

I have about 3yrs TVR ownership under my belt, and recently re-insured for a tenth of that - just can't believe it.

Anyone else had any previously crazy insurance quote experience??

That's just nuts !! Got to be a problem there somewhere along the line.

I've no idea what they are like as an insurer but I've just done an online quote with privilege using the same details you supplied but with my location (Lancs) and they quoted £320.

Tell him to keep shopping around... there are better prices out there.

Cool thanks everyone.

Got a quote to £450 with Priviledge - bit of an improvement!!!

He must have been calling ALL the wrong companies - but he was ready top shell out over £3k.

Sorry guys!!

I own a Griffith, so I'm just used to posting in here - I guess they are treated pretty much the same by insurance companies (aside from the value).

I'd have thought Griffiths are involved in a far higher proportion of non-fault accidents, as other road user are transfixed by their stunning looks and don't look where they're going.

Cheapest by far
Hagerty
They don't require the '6K miles in the last two years in a RWD 200+ BHP car' experience like the others.
Mine came in at £418 PA plus 10% for track day cover if you need it.
15K agreed value 500 Griff
However, must be garaged, 5K miles PA and it must be a second car. Ie you must have another car insured, though not with them.

Uncle Fester has it - Hagerty highly recommended.

Not Griffith related granted but the cerb on 3k miles per annum (classic policy etc) - £220 fully comp etc and to add the chim was only another £105 ish.

Wouldn't have shopped around if Footman James had not hiked their prices so much this year.

Oh well, onwards and downwards....

I had to sign a disclaimer stating my previous experience with powerful cars and rear wheel drive. Lets face it, these machines do require a great deal of care and knowledge of rear wheel drive behaviour. Added to that the strong effect of engine braking and dont forget group 20 insurance! It's not surprising that most insurance companies require previous experience...

Definately Hagerty's, 3k per annum ( presume extendable) ,garaged and all the norm for classic policy.
Agreed value.

£173.

However, you may find Haggerty and Manning do not cover commuting or any business mileage, so forget the blat into the office on those rare but sunny mornings.

Yes, I questioned this. They said the occassional blat to work is ok.
As I either work 6am-6pm (so wouldnt get the griff out at 5am) or 6pm-6am nights(so wouldnt leave it on the carpark)
it wasnt a problem for me.
