I read that a top end rebuild costing anything up to £2K is to be expected with milages over the 40K mark. Is this true for all variants or just the 500. I guess the top end should be normally quite with hydraullic lifters so what are the tell tale signs/noises. Is wear easier to detect with a cold or warm engine. I am aware as an all ali engine they are not that quite until fully warmed up.

2K??

that seems a bit steep when most indies will charge about 1200 for a cam swap

Also 40K doesn't mean a rebuild is required, cams can last as much as 80K if the right oil is used and its not been thrashed.

The rover V8 is a tough old lump but it does wear its cam out, especially if the cam is a high lift one as most TVR ones are.

Its not too drastic to change and there's more choice than ever for a replacement

Yes, just changed my cam for £1200 including service and MOT. Seems they can last 30,000 like mine did but others will do much higher mileages. I suspect it's down to the type of oil and also the quality of the metal used (I know nothing about metallurgy though so this may be balls).

The more experience I have of V8 TVRs the more I am comng to the conclusion that oil choice is very important. My last one ran on Mobil 1 and hardly used any oil. My current car with a lower mileage consumed much, much more Shell Helix and I now use something else.

Really? I've just gotten some quotes and the cheapest was £1500. Steepest was a shade over £2K.

Depends on the definition of top end rebuild..a straight cam change should be around £1000 at a guess, but if you go for a more expensive option with new valve springs etc then £1500-2000.
My cam kit was £650 for the box of bits, before looking at labour costs and fitting new vernier gear.
