I appear to have a lot of backlash in the transmission, it's particularly noticable when backing off the throttle.
With the car on stands I've turned the back wheels with it in gear and theres about 1cm of backlash at the gearbox output flange, any ideas?

I had something similar on my Griff - it was the rear axle.

The nut on the axle was loose .. I suspect an internal wear of some kind but it was a simple fix but don't know if it was worn internally somehow.

The bolts that fix the drive shafts onto the Diff and the similar flange arrangement on the Diff / Propshaft union are well know for working loose. As are the Diff mounting bolts and the Diff bushes.
