I was driving to meet the feery at plymouth when after 3 hrs on the road the engine gave out at 70 miles per hour and constant rpm

after leaving the car with the aa/recovery people..a failed coil and bill for £141 upon my return yesterday.

The car had been left outside under trees and adorned with new colours from the droppings of various wildlife in the exeter area...

Great!

Althought the return journey was uneventful as the engine did not miss a beat.

Has anyone experienced a coil failure on their griff like this?

Think this is a fairly common problem with the original part which was rather cheap and nasty. Changed mine when I first got the car because oil was seeping from the case and the terminals were loose. I did it as a preventative measure but it made a noticeable improvement higher up the rev range.

Ours had a heart attack on the London Thunder, new one is fine. That's on a '96 car, so if your car is around that age, I'd be looking at replacing the coil and maybe HT leads too.
