just fitted new cam and high rev lifters, got it back together and fired it up last night, only to have tappet noises.
stipped it down this morning assuming that one of the pushrods / preload was incorrectly set, but have found that with any valve in the closed position I can push down on the rocker making the pushrod compress the lifter by up to 3mm before it gets to stiff to compress further, the gaps are okay, but the lifters seem rather soft.
oil pressure yesterday was normal, apppears that the lifters have bled, filled with oil, but on the old rover lifters one thing you couldn`t do was compress the things by hand at all, makes me wonder if this is contrbuting to the tappet noise.
all help greatly appreciated, the firm I bought them from have asnwered the phone, but will not talk about it until monday, would have thought before 12 on a sat morning would have been reasonable!

I was under the impression that these types of lifters were supposed to bleed down like that; therefore reducing the overlap at low revs and allowing a racier cam to be installed and still be drivable at lower revs, for the lifters to then 'pump up' at higher revs to maximise the cam profile. I also thought the by product of such lifters was noise, hence when people generally go for standard replacement items.

no solid lifters not recommended for my cam.
the lifters are anti pump, not the other type, anti bleed I think they are called, so should be fairly quiet at low revs, managed to get hold of Rob at v8 developements just now, and confirmed the lifter type, will recheck the preload again, and put it back together and fire her up, apparently some cams and lifters can take as long as 5 minutes to settle down, so fingers crossed!
many thanks to rob, I didn`t buy the parts from him, but very happy to offer his expertise on a saturday morning.thumbup

Does sound as if they still have air in them. Hopefully they'll fill fairly quickly, but watch the oil pressure like a hawk in case this is a side effect of some other problem.

When you build the engine its usually a good idea to soak the lifters in oil overnight, you probably don't fancy doing that now tho....

thanks guys, I have just removerd the sump just to make sure that the oil pickup filter is 100% clean of silicon bits ect, which was okay, was in two minds about soaking them in oil before hand, some people say yes, some no, this time though I went with the no`shehe
On closer inspection this morning have found that 5 out of 16 of the lifters could still be compressed by hand, not so many as I originally thought, so I hope its just not bled thoroughly yet.
will reassembe and see what happens, and give it a good 5 minutes whilst watching the oil pressure.

found last night that one lifter was not bleeding, stripped down again this morning, and lifter on inlet no3 was still soft, to confirm this, I replaced the lifter with one of the original ones, rover, set the gap and putit all back together and fired her up.
the engine ran sweet as you like, no rattles at all, so will now strip down for the umpteanth time in the last 3 days, and get hold of the supplier to send out a replacement.

sometimes you really have to wonder is it all worth it.

Hi Clive,

I believe that those types should be softer at low revs, thats the point, similar to the vvti type cams. They then stiffen up at hi-er revs to stay with the wild cams. On reduction of revs they then bleed down to give economy driveability that a regular tappet can do...its stays pumped up.

However, if there are two types of action from the same lifters somethings up.

Never used these so I can't tell you whats it is I'm afraid, but I'd guess that squashy (with no oil pressure) is the correct feel. when oil pressure is there they will stiffen up.
I'd guess the solid feel is wrong.

Andy
Boy, you're really getting into this now Clive!

hi Quinny, wavey and cheers Andy, within 30 minutes of running, having stripped it down, all of the lifters except this one were solid, and with this bad one replaced the tapping noise has dissapeared.
Ive had the dodgy one soaking in oil now for a good 4 hrs, and its still soft, so can only deduce that its duff!!

you are right in a way Andy, but I think your`e refering to another type, which I can`t remember the name of, that bleed down, mine are just high rev anti pump.

at this rate Andy you`ll be offering me a job in your pit crewhehe

hey ho, bloody tvr`s dont you just love `em.

Clive just out of interest which may help you, an anti pump lifter only works at the point of valve bounce/float, 99 times out of a hundread all the double springs used on rover engines will handle even the most wild of cams to 7000 rpm before lifter pump up becomes a problem, i have never used any other lifter other than stock ones no need to!

put a new lifter in this evening, fired her up and rattling its head of for about 15minutes, then much to my relief it shut up!

what a relief, just got to get the tickover down a bit, but back on the road at last, cam feels pretty responsive to!!hehe
