Hi
My recently bought 1994 griff 500 (special exhaust / upgraded brakes) - rated at the production at 306bhp at 5700rpm at the flywheel (according to the registers - thanks dom at tvr power) - is delivering good bhp up to 4500rpm, then totally flattens with a somewhat "rattlening" noise...
Who can give me a hint on where to look at to solve the problem ?
Txs in advance!

Is there a "quick and dirty" way to check if the camshaft is worn? I mean without dissembling too much...

If you pull the inlet manifold off then I believe you can check the wear on the lobes.

how long ago did tvr power test the cars performance? was this before or after you bought it?
it could well be cam wear, but I don`t think this would happen over a short period of time, if it was giving good figures recenlty then your problems could lie elsewhere, best have it checked out.

just re read your post, are you refering to tvr book figures, not the actual performance figures of your car?
if so then like Wildfire says, check your cam for wear, also the lifters and rockers.
if you need advice on how ro strip it dowm mail me, Ive done this job quite a lot recentlyhehe

Sorry, just realized the end of the story was missing, allthough this problem is solved since a while, and I believe my experience can be shared to all:

Thanks guys for your hints, it was indeed the cam, completely worne, I think there was 2 lobes that were ok, of the rest 1 was even completely circle...
Incredible that this motor could still have good manners with such a cam...
Now have done bottom-end rebuild plus cam changed to original early nineties "wild" cam specs (305 degrees). Checked all gremlins (spotted one inside-broken wire to the thermistor and changed the ignition module) too.
Result: a rocket on wheels... difficult not being euphoric. The power delivery is just amazing, just explosive starting 2500 finishing 6000rpm without any hole, combining perfectly with the short gearbox (LT77).
Sound is also terrific - the combustion changed and so the sound... (pre-cats have "worn off", and the rest is an alloy sport exhaust).

ehm, I believe the correct word is "stainless steel" for the exhaust, sorry my english is very poor indeed.
re power, I will do a dyno very soon and post it.
