Should you be able to move the needle part by hand? with little effort? a lot of effort? or not at all?

Nope. I was confused by the same thing earlier this year and was told that you won't be able to move it by hand (I got about 1mm movement on mine).

Think you've got to stick it in a vice and pull the thing out. It will come out but not without force.
