Hi all,

Thought I had a leaky manifold blowing fumes/smoke into the cabin. Had the car in the local today to have it checked out, no joy could find nothing wrong. On the way home, gave it a blast and cabin starts too fill up with smoke again !! Got her home could not see anything from the exhausts, mystery, thought I would check out where the smoke was coming from and bingo, its burnt a hole through into the drivers footwell!! Looks like the heatshilding has degraded and the manifold heat has burnt a hole I guess the smoke was coming from smouldering fibreglass. Anyhow, 2 questions, will the manifold have to come off to put new shielding in ( looking at it i would think so ) and how best to deal with the hole ? Plate it with some metal, fill it or just leave it ? Hole is about 0.5" by 3-4" or so in the footwell, cant see how bad it is the other side.

TIA

Tim.

Hi

I put new heat shield on the left side (as you view via the bonnet) with ease. I used self adhesive bacause it is hard to get the rivets back in at the base. You only need to get the heat shield in the way.

Another possibility, albeit much worse, is the manifold getting super hot due to an exhaust valve leaking. Check after a fast run if one pipe glows red.

Tim Have a word with Barretti. He erm erm made a hole in his wing with the manifold and in the end cut out a section close to the manifold and fibre glassed a grove into the wing so it wasnt so close.
Sure theres a thread somewhere about it.

Glass it up is the easiest way ~ but be warned heat delaminates fg so the damage may be more widespread than the hole.

I would check that the pre-cats in the manifold are flowing - if they are blocked your manifolds get far too hot. Some have also noted that faults / incorrect alignment in the engine mounts can push the manifolds too close to the inner wing. There were repair panels available - dont know if they still are, TVR modified the inner wings with a dimple to have a little more clearance. Baretti got some off Tim @ ACT IIRC BTW (but I think they were CF).

Ceramic coating is cost effective in the long rum INHO wink

It wasn't until I went to look for the stuff I posted about my manifolds that I realised how often I post on PH. Is it addictive?

This post has some info on my manifold replacement, including pictures of the glassing work I did. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

YHM (or you will shortly) with my phone number if you want to chat about this or anything else manifolds related for that matter biggrin
