Hi All! Have an early '96 Griff 500, was idling at 1100-1300rpm but performance very good. Renewed stepper motor to check and found to be worn/corroded, have replaced with new but now idle dropped to 900 but car running very rich and rough with temp gague reading on MAX, have new gauge sender but not yet fitted! Could this be the problem or airflow meter??? Stumped!!

Could well be the ECU water temp sender.
About a tenner from a good motor factor.

Not sure but possibly replacing the stepper motor has confused the ECU. Might be worth resetting the ECU and see if that helps.

When you say the temp gauge is at max is that even when the engine is cold or does it rise to that?

If it always at max regardless of the engine temp then there's certainly something wrong, but not sure if the ECU takes a feed off that temp sender unit or not.

Hi Guys

Thanks for your help!

Just taken for a blast, tick over down, idle at 950 but gauge up to 1100 and stays there! just hesitation when touching throttle.

Think you may be right re-setting ECU, will get that done!!

Shouldn't idle be around 900 when hot? agree try resetting ecu first after the work you have done.

You've obviously disturbed something or the gauge sender has failed by coincidence. You want to get that gauge working again because it's important to be able to monitor the engine temperature, but it's nothing to do with the fuel or ignition systems. Rough running and/or rich and/or misfiring indicates that something else is faulty too. Rather than give you a list of everything that could possible go wrong to cause this (basically the entire engine management system) you should get an expert to diagnose it for you. It's easy enough if you know what you're doing but you stand to make things worse if you don't know what you're doing.
