hi Guys,

How do you get the milled aluminium knob off in a 96 griff?

I am trying to replace the gearstick gaiter, but need to remove the ball to get it in place. The bible mentions that the lower part of the knob is a locking nut, but does it come off? have been trying all sorts of things to get the knob to unscrew, but wont budge an inch!

any help appreciated.

Ian

had the same problem on mine last year, ended up using two pairs of mole grips, but pad the jaws out with some rubber strip, or they will rip into the aluminium.yes

Try one of those rubber strap things you use for getting tops off bottles. Great for all things stuck like oil filters, and coolant reservoirs. Got mine at B&Q found it in amongst the stanley knives etc

I've got my knob on the desk here in front of me getmecoat

No, no, wait. redface
I can tell you there's nothing odd about the thread in the knob. You are aware its a 2 piece jobby aren't you, and you have to undo the 'stem' that holds the gaiter downwards before trying to unscrew the knob.

I hope you don't mind if I add a question or two to this thread then, since we've got all the knob experts in one place hehe

Can you do anything to get little scratches and dinks out of the knob
Is there a replacement bit for the thing on the top that tells you where the gears are on an LT77 box. I trust the early ones just had this rather than it being machined in like the later ones with the T5 box but mine is blank.

I'll avoid pointing out all the obvious jokes but they are there.....

I thought about removing marks after mine dropped off and rolled down the drive while I was cleaning the Gaiter, if you tried to polish it it means your hand flies off it (oh matron) and using fine emery paper would leave uneven marks unless the marks are very superficial. I think the best way would be to get a friendly engineering company to mount it on a threaded bar and give it a fine machine in a lathe.

Can't help you with the markings...

Alternatively buy this onebiggrin

Edited to add

Leven (If you like the design) had their's on offer at the Growl for £40 and she said that this batch had lower unit cost as they'd ordered more so they could sell them cheaper

Try unscrewing the gear knob after you have been out for a drive in the car!
where rubber gloves, because the knob gets very hot/ but enables you to undo it! Well it did on mine? woohoo

thanks for the comments, some useful, some not so!

Does the lower locking nut unlock as normal, ie anti clockwise. Feels that solid that I am afraid I am twisting the entire gear box off!

Yes, but if looking from the top, it'll be clockwise...

You need to polish your knob sir.redface

Fine emery to remove scratches then a good polish then get it anodised back to silver...probably cost you a tenner or a couple of beers at a local platers...
