...problem or not?

I have heard of discussions about carbon cans and also heard that one should drill a 1mm hole in the fuel filler cap (I have the Leven one btw but it used to happen with my old original one)

Anyone any thoughts on this??

They all do that sir!! No holes in the cap as i belive its a sealed system, them who know more than I will confirm or shoot me down in flames please shoottank

Carbon can and/or stickey valves etc are much talked about, some have tried an air test etc to check if its blocked IIRC. Though, I would think if the can or valve was knackered you would also get a smell of fuel in and around the boot ? just guessing at that one.

Tim.

Wouldn't drilling a hole in the 'sealed' system allow venting thru the petrol cap and thus into the boot/cabin ? smokin ... yikes ... angel

Had a quick search, but it only goes back 2 years.... I'm sure Leven actually posted a "no-no" to drilling the cap - explicitly stating it should be sealed (MOT failure quoted in another thread BTW). The carbon can does the venting and pressure equalization of the tank anyway - or not as in most of these cases (they are consumables albeit 5-10 years life).

Aha...that could be the issue then. Car is 10 years old next year...

Any ideas (anyone) on how to sort/fix/replace??

Graham the chances are the hissing is due to the carbon canister in the front o/s wing needing attention see the Bible.

I've had that on one or two cars (it happens on my alloy cap now) and I don't think it's a problem as such. The only time it can become problematical is when the tank's low on fuel it's warm and you've got some serious suction going on and then it can be a right ba5tard to get off.

The misses Shogun is real bad for it, the pressure don't hold the cap in but the hiss go's on and on, takes about 15 sec till it clears, like a bottle of coke thats been shook up wink

The official line is that the fuel system should be sealed to prevent fuel vapour getting our, Global warming etc. The venting is normally done by the carbon can. If this is not working for any reason then the tank will pull a vaccum or over pressure hence the hiss. I may also start distorting causing the baffels to work loose! The solution is to either make the carbon can work correctly or allow the cap to vent slightly depending on how 'green' you are. If you have one of our caps call us and we can tell you how to modify it.

You are actually being very 'green' ~ the carbon footprint of manufacturing disposable cars is far greater than that of maintaining a 'long-lasting' petrol eater wink ~~ and we recycle a lot of parts...

Being a tight Northerner I do hate the idea of my precious fuel evaporating away without me having any fun with it....
