CV joints or something sloppy in the diff gets my vote.

Mine does it sometimes too, and I can see no reason why...

Mine too ('96 500) - I've been told not to worry about it smile

I have at one time also experienced loose propshaft/diff flange bolts which caused a bit if clunking similar to your description.

My Griff showed the same symptoms - replaced the diff bushes and all is well now.

Agree with MikeB..........super clunk equaled the diff bushes for me too.

Sounds like the diff, have mine tightened up every year, but I had a similar thing on my old land rover 90, turned out to be the propshaft wearing.

Ain't got a spare and the tank seems tied down tight enough.

Had a quick look through the alloys with a torch and there does indeed seem to be new diff bushes fitted.

MikeyB
hehe if the tank carbon canister vent system is blocked it will cause the tank to make a "Boing" type noise as it empties which normally happens just after you start the car due to the creation of a vacuum.

If you drive on a neutral throttle - not under acceleration or deceleration, just pootling along - do you get any sort of rattle? Failing driveshaft UJ's can make this noise on their way out.

I don't think so, I only seem to get it when I touch the throttle or let off the throttle.

All other times I don't get any noise (more than the usual!). I reckon that its gotta be the diff loose - or the mounting plate?.

I will just have to arrange to get it in the air and have a poke around.

Sounds like drive shaft bolts or diff bushes then Mike yes hence the slap on or off throttle.
