...griffith 500 lazy over 5.000rpms
Discussion
...how come my '96 griffith 500 seems to be lazier and lazier over 5.000 rpms? the engine has just been rebuilt, i've finally cured the electrical gremlins that were driving me crazy (a loose contact in the coil...), also there quite a few goodies added to the engine like triple carbon act plenum, larger base and 45 carbon trumpets, decatted sport exhaust, larger airmeter (bosch) and tuned chip...but the car just does not go like a few years ago!! it doesnt leave traces of black rubber on the tarmac in first and second anymore...and does not like to revv over 5.000...pls tell me it's not the age...

Inlet hose
, if its the original it could be balloning internally (double skin separated inside
).
Air filter possibly has a plastic bag/debris over it
Throttle cable stretched, not achieving throttle stop
Defective throttle pot not giving correct voltage to ECU
Collapsed exhaust internals/baffles or blocked cat if still fitted
Knackered cam, or cam timing slipped if vernier pulley fitted (should have one as 500)
fubared compression
.
I don't know could be many many things.......... but the top 5 are easy enough to check yourself and are free, the others start getting expensive.

thanks harry for the indications:

first three and the fifth can't be.
if for the fourth you mean the throttle potentiometer, i've checked it already...it's ok.
also, the cam is just new and the rebuilt was done by quite an expert proffessional mechanic (used to work on big range rovers engines...)
could it be something concerned to the timing? could it be that over some rpms it 'moves'...but actually it does not ping, even at full throttle and from mid rpms range...
could it be the heads that are the original since i bought the car 11 years ago and they were never cleaned or machined again?? so that they flow well until some rpms and then they dont?

Has it been set up on a rolling road since the rebuild & goodies being fitted?
nop, never went on a rolling road...goodies were fitted long ago, before the rebuilt.
Silly one, its not dropped into limp home mode with the ECU, try resetting it to see if it picks up for a bit, or even better has someone got a fault code reader near you
.
If on standard dizzy is the mechanical advance still working
How old is the exhaust, I note you have a sports exahust, but is it fair new or old, if the internal baffles are shite metal they can collapse in a very short period (2-3 years), a bit like putting a potato up the exhaust

the exhaust is about 7 years ago, the central silencer is pretty old, that could be a reason...it could not be allowing a proper flow to the engine at high revs, i think i'll work that direction as well (i'll dump it streight away)

Which cam has been fitted?
Good point...and do you know what cam was fitted previously? Was it the same?Edited by panic on Wednesday 29th August 21:47
