Hello peeps,

Our 1994 500 has developed an indicator problem on the way home from work today. With the ignition on, all 6 indicators light up and stay on, dash lights and LED included. With the ignition off, the hazards work fine, but the central locking / alarm doesn't work.

From looking at the wiring diagram on p278 of the bible, if I understand correctly the only items where all 6 indicators could be connected together are in the hazard relay and the column stalk switch.

With the hazard relay removed, the indicators all still light up (except the hazard doesn't work of course), implying it's the column switch. But the column switch is only powered by the flasher unit, which clearly works OK as the hazards flash when the relay is in. So why don't all 6 indicators flash together if the column switch is dodgy???

If the top diode shown were to fail, the ignition would come on with the hazard switch [it doesn't]. If the lower diode shown were to fail, the hazard relay would be energised with the ignition on, but with the relay removed I still have a problem!

Something wrong in the alarm controller perhaps, somehow powering the 6 indicators whenever the ignition is on? It's a Microscan 400 series, but I haven't found where the magic box is yet.

Any suggestions appreciated!

After market alarm installers seem to have a habit of tapping into all the indicators, why just a single connection to the hazards I have never quite grasped?

Hazard is a relay on Chims, it just links to the L & R flashers, hence the single diode.

Thanks Dave,

It's definitely the alarm module - found it buried behind the dash, have taken it out and the indicators have returned to normal. I just can't lock the car now....

It's only 3 years old - I'll give the Microscan people a ring tomorrow and see if they can help.

The Microscan people (Performance Products Ltd.) said they'd take my unit back and have now sent me a new replacement with a couple of new remote fobs, all FOC despite the thing being well out of warranty. Top service, thanks guys!

New control unit fitted last night, all is well again.

Nice one.
Good of you to post a positive resolution by a supplier too. Maybe we could all do that a bit more often. thumbup
