Speedo's packed in

The speedo on my '98 500 has suddenly stopped. Working fine on a run to the local fete. Coming back (after a short stop)....nothing, well there was a very brief leap of the needle on the way back before all quiet again. No reading from the needle nor is the odometer turning (its mechanical).

Any thoughts on where to start the diagnosis ? Thanks
