3rd and 4th gear selector problems
Discussion
Your help would be much appreciated with what is turning into a real headache of a problem. I've got '94 pre-serp 500 with LT77 box.
Following a recent engine change some damage occured to the nylon bush at the end of the gear shift. I'd already had minimal difficulties with getting into 3rd and 4th gears but this is now impossible at times.
My local non-tvr specialist garage, who initially seemed competent, are clearly out of their depth (that'll teach me
). Despite several visits to the garage including a refashioning of the the nylon bush out of some kind of space-age ?teflon substance, things are worse than ever. There new bush makes shifting in the other gears better than with the original nylon item, but I frequently can't engage 3rd or 4th at all.
Does this signify a gearbox problem? My knowledge of the innards of the griff are limited.
Many thanks.

First off check the condition of the rest of the linkage mounting bushes, any slop in these will waste movement and reduce the shift effort available.
2nd try changing the oil, you can use ATF which was the original fitment and is rubbish at protecting the gears and bearings but being very thin gives good synchro performance or the castrol 75-90W stuff which is generally excellent gear oil but is thicker when cold and will result in a slower shift than the ATF until its warmed up. upon which it is superior

Thanks Matt,
I'll get onto it. To be honest, the problem feels much more mechanical. Often it's simply impossible to get into 3rd at all, and only by trying a few other gears first does it eventually go in. I'm amazed changing the oil makes that much difference.
I'll keep this updated.
