Hi guys.
Sorry to gatecrash from the wedge forum.

My clutch is starting to slip and I have been advised to fit one from a griff 500.

I know the griff 500's have had 2 gearboxes in them - the early LT77 box until 1996 and the T5 box post 1996 (I think I'm right here but happy to be corrected) smile

I am guessing the clutch is different for the 2 gearboxes and I would need the earlier version.

My question is HOW do the 2 griff 500 clutches differ in appearance? If I had only 1 in my hand, how could I tell I had the right one?

I want to order a clutch online (because I'm not paying silly money from TVR specialist) but I want to be sure when it arrives, I get the right clutch. I am taking the car into the garage to have the clutch fitted and obviously I don't want to risk supplying the wrong one!

Also, any pointers on the cheapeast place to get one from? For info, I am after friction plate, pressure plate and bearing.

Any info gratefully appreciated.

not sure any what visible differences there are between the two, but I replaced mine last year, and the kit cost me around £340 from tvr car parts, you have to be sure it is the right one, ie, definately the 500 clutch, as a clutch from a smaller model will soon break up.
I also had seen some advertised a lot cheaper on the internet, but decided that I couldn`t trust the seller when enquiring that the clutch was specifically for the 500, as I believe the 4lt clutches will fit onto the car, and its not the sort of job you want to do very often! so bought one from a reputable source for piece of mind.

I fully agree, but I need it for a 4 litre wedge, not a 5 litre griff.

I was told I need the 5 litre jobbie as the fingers on the pressure plate have more "spring" in them, hence giving a better feel to the clutch, not for the clutch friction plate itself.

Perhaps it would be worth giving AP Racing a call

Alternatively stick a Range rover clutch in it about 80 quid from land rover specialists, they use an LT77 box and being fairly heavy and 4.6ltrs work the clutch pretty hard

Did they make a manual transmission for the 4.6 variants? Never seen a manual flywheel with the Rover crank timing wheel ~ would be nice to have one wink

V8d are a good source for clutches IIRC.

Thanks for the replies so far, but from the endless research I have done, I want to go the way as stated above. I just want to know:

"HOW do the 2 griff 500 clutches differ in appearance? If I had only 1 in my hand, how could I tell I had the right one"?

The clutches are the same for the LT77 and T5. I put a 500 clutch in a 4.3 Chim with an LT77. I got it from Ebay for about £120 for the kit, it was only the release bearing that was gone but seemed daft to just change that. Ebay cluch was much heaver than the standard one with better feel and was gerneraly heavier duty.
