I was travelling home along the Yorkshire TT route on Saturday and noticed about half way along that the temperature guage was running at about 70 rather than then usual 88ish. When I got home I saw that the front number plate had fallen off.

Obviously the presence of the standard front number plate has a considerable effect on running temps and it seems like a cheap and quick fix to fit a slightly smaller one so I will be trying a 3/4 size as discussed on a recent thread.

No plate is indeed worth ten degrees and a small one is worth about five degrees. Not that I experimented on the public highway you understand wink

I have a 11x3 plate on my car in summer - works a treat and motorway temps sit at 75 deg even on the hotest day.

In winter I put the standard plate back on as I find the temp struggles to get to 65 deg.

Dear Coetzeeh,

Where did you get your plate from? Also mine was stuck on with some sort of double-sided tape - is that standard?

I bought my plate at the Classic Car show at the NEC last year - cost a tenner. I cant remember the traders name I'm afraid.

The plate is attached with double sided tape too - works fine so far.

The front plate should be held on by a couple of screws. Douple sided tape OK for the rear.

3/4 size front plate from Fancy Plates, definitely dropped the temp by at least 5 degrees.
My front plate is held on by the doublesided foam tape supplied with the plate, done 12K miles never budged.

I've got my front plate(s) attached with 1/2" velcro. It makes it easy to remove for washing the car and to swap plates for MOT or remove completely for track days.

Where did you source that from? I could do with some for exactly the reasons you mention.

You can get the sticky doublesided velcro at places like B&Q, Homebase etc, get the "Heavy Duty"

Del had some american type of super velcro at the growl, it looked very strong compared to the usual, John.

Why not get a small adhesive bonnet one. It really keeps the temperature down and looks great. However don't get a full size stick on one as they look horrible and its best to stick just below the TVR badge on the front otherwise it looks strange. See my profile pic.

Not entirely what you'd call 'legal' though, eh?

Bought a 3/4 size plate from Fancy Plates and will use the velcro fix as suggested.

Thanks for all the helpful comments.
