Yep, that old chestnut. I need a new instrument dash as the veneer has cracked.
What's the best option.
1) Get it re-veneered. Any company suggestions?
2) Buy a secand hand one. I understand this is a problem ith pre-cat's as they were all different due to instrument sizes? If this is not the case, where can I buy one?
3) A metal one. Are Levan still doing these?
How hard is it to remove the dash?
Also, the instrument lights do not work, is this easy to fix?

London Carriage Craft usually crop up when this is mentioned. If your back plate is in good condition I'd say get it re-veneered. Trying to find a second hand one is likely to be difficult.
As for removing the dash, it's pretty straight forward. Two screws and drop the steering wheel. Make sure you label all the plugs/sockets before you take them apart.

Leven Technology are still doing the dash bits.
Have a look at the bottom of this page clicky
Make sure you get the right one and include the window/heater switch panel if you have a 500
The window/heater switch panel is perspex on my Pre-cat and the LE's didn't have one at all as they have the heater dials from the Chimaera in the dashboard and the window switches are inset directly into the centre console.

i think there is a button under the dash which
turns the lights off as i remember(don't know why)
you may have hit it with your knee,i used to do it all the time.
Is that the red button at the top of the foot well?turns the lights off as i remember(don't know why)

I wondered what that was for

Why would you need to switch the instrument lights off?
Thanks for the info guys

I would have thought any decent wood worker could use the old one as a pattern and make a new dash if the original is too worn/damaged to use.As for removing the dash, it's pretty straight forward. Another vote for London Carriage Craft here.
Agreed top guys they do a quality job for a reasonable price. Ignore what it says in the steve heath book about them being tricky to remove. They are a doddle, did mine in about half hour and about the same refitting. Dont worry about trying to save the leds on the heater control panel, just cut them off. All leds available from maplins via the internet, for some stoopid reason they do not sell the triangular ones in store only via internet.
