I am about to have my cam 'reworked' (500 serp)and have just received the data of the existing profile - its the std TVR cam (435? - don't have exact info in front of me). I thought I would share this data for those interested.
E1 and I1 are presumably Exhaust 1 and Inlet 1.
I would appreciate any advice/discussion from the experts on improving the profile for fast road use - good idle, good torque from low rpm to 5500. (MC1 - Stealth style of performance? ie. Duration 270-285 and Ica 112 - 114)

(PS. I am located in Oz and would like to source/modify the cam on Oz if possible. I will be upgrading the ECU to MS, but only after I have the new cam running with dizzy, AFM, etc.)

I run a H404 in mine, which might be too much for some, and you wouldn't run it properly unless you junk the Lucas/dizzy set up and fit a different ecu(Omex,Emerald etc). The other popular cam which V8 Developments do is called the stealth, and this can be run with the conventional Lucas and dizzy, and seems a poular choice now that its been out a while, and many have chosen it.
If i had my time again however,i would be talking to Jamie at Castle Race Engines('CRE' on here) about his cams as well.He has some very impressive stats and graphs for the cam choices he can supply that look spot on to me.

Now that I've got the ECU set up properly, the H404 is reasonably tame. The car is certainly usable in town, although it does have to be used a gear lower than I would really like, just because it's noisy.

Even Nic's beginning to like it now - so it can't be that lumpy and awkward.

Certainly talk to Jamie as well as Rob. Both will give good advice and there should be a decent choice for you there.

As Mike says, the stealth-like cams are probably a better bet unless you're prepared to spend a lot of time and effort on ECUs etc to get the car to run sweetly low down. Also, the fuel consumption with a 404 is higher than I would like, and I'm sure it's down to the car quaffing the fuel instead of drinking it...

Well - I have a 404 mechanical .. and after the first mapping it was a pig but Mark Adams had another shot and made a superb job of it.

It's now a pussy cat and that's with a dizzy and 73mm plenum !

I second the V8Developements STEALTH cam. This has a superb smooth power delivery but maintaining excellent driveability at low revs. Its not all about max bhp at high revs. Far better to have the power mid range IMHO. Definately speak to Rob at V8Developments. He offers bespoke cams made to users profiles...

Suppose Pasco's right! But What i noticed with the Stealth setup is the awesome power and torque at lower revs making 3rd gear very strong when coming out of slow corners. I'm so bloody lazy!

Thanks for all the suggestions for replacement cams, however I was hoping there would be some direct comment about possible changes to the standard profile data provided. I realise the specific cam data (such as MC1 / Stealth) is proprietry, but was hopeing somone may have provide some further guidance from own experience.
(Seems silly to pay as much as 70Pds just for postage alone to ship a cam from the UK! + 500Pds for a cam kit)

Hi,
there is a place in Adelaide, www.triumphroverspares.com.au they service TVR's, build rover v8 performce engines and supply performance parts. They would probably be able to help. I got a MC1 cam and chain kit shipped over from V8 developements in UK and fitted myself - chose the MC1 based on comments on here as I was after good drivability. Very pleased with the results - eliminated the mild shunt at low revs and lumpy idle - although the cam I took out was well worn on all its lobes.

Hi dave
I have tried replying via the email you sent me but it keeps getting sent back!! "hotmail".
I dont really undertand what it is you actually want to be honest? do you want someone to spec you a cam? personaly from my point of view if it was me building your engine i would want to do all that myself, i would a bit peed off if someone asked me to build an engine for them and just gave me a cam to fit!! well to be honest you just cant? way too many variables, exhaust manifolds, induction,cr,squish, fuel oct..... i would speak to your engine builder, but if you are struggling let me know everything you have on the engine and drop me a beer and i will sort you one out

Hi Rob, many thanks for your response and sorry about the email (tourops@ozemail.com.au). I hope to sit down with the cam and engine specialist tomorrow. The engine is perfectly standard and was in good condition (and strong performer, but no figures to quote). I have now removed the pre-cats and the engine will simply have worn parts replaced. I will be replacing the ECU with MS after I have it running normally again with std setup. I realise there are many variables, but I was hoping to have some additional suggestions which would move the std cam towards the MC1/Stealth performance profile. Any input suggestions still welcome, but I weel post how I go.

For those of you that are interested, I have had my discussion on modifying the std cam. The cam specialist basically confirmed what has been the theme on PH (and input from the experts). His observation was that the Lobe separation (ie. Ica) was on the wide side, duration and lift were pretty good. So I have decided on 285 duration and 112 for Ica (down from 117) which will follow a profile they have used previously for Rover V8's down here.
One thing we did not really discuss was the increased duration of the Inlet across the range of lift when compared to the exhaust duration?? (294/.005 thu to 38/.275 vs 283/.005 thru 58/.275).
