I've an idea for a product which with your fabrication skills should be right up your street.
as you know the rear view mirror on the Griff's and Chimera is next to useless when the hood is down so how about a replacement bit of 'S' bend steel or ally bar to move the mirror and inch or 2 towards the header rail and so providing a view over the folded hood?
the current mount just slides out of the plastic bit glued to the screen so I ws thinking of something to go between the mirror and screen mount
Waddya think?

The basic idea is inspired.
However, if you put the mirror higher then you're reducing the distance you're able to see to the rear with the hood up.
By drawing an extended line between mirror-top of rear window-road you will see what I mean.
Conversely, a higher mounted mirror would provide a better view near to the car when reversing.
Perhaps what we need is a mirror mount that has two positions and can quickly be switched between them.
With the roof down the limiting factors are different and the higher the mirror is, the better. This means that we could consider a position that's so high that it couldn't be there with the roof up.
I think the ideal would be with the top of the mirror level with the top of the screen in the highest position and about where it is now for the lower setting.

Hoover, you are so right

I cant see that this can be easily done, the rear view mirror has a ball on the end of the arm that allows the mirror to be positioned where you want it, this would need to be copied,so as to increase the length of the arm to be able to raise the mirror into a higher position when the roof is off, then swivel back down for when the roof is back on, so cannot see a cheap and tidy looking solution to be honest, also, how many people are still using the original mirrors, mine came away months ago, and replaced it with a halfrauds version, things that are mass produced in plastic are very difficult to improve upon, and if it ends up costing say £30 + people may probably say, well I`ve put up with it so far, so why spend the money!
will still give it some thought, but not sure that it will work out simply.

Why not fit a periscope to look over the hood?

I'd think the easiest way of doing this would be to create two arms that are fixed. One as standard length and one for the roof down position. Then create a part that replaces the ball in the back of the mirror but has a fixing that clips onto the new arms.

So when swapping just slip the whole mirror off the screen mounting, swap the arm and replace.
The original mirror is available as it's a Peugeout 205 item so maybe supply the mirror with the ball swapped for the modified one.
(I'll swap the idea for a free mirror if you make it

What about fitting one of these...
then you could do away with the vanity mirror and the wing mirrors, as well as the rear view
