I had it in an old A/H Sprite - basically a gap between the piston and cylinder which gives a distinct 'tinkle' noise under acceleration (not unlike pinking) and you see the tell-tale blue puff of burning oil out the exhaust!
Never experienced it lately and certainly not in a V8, but if you've got it fraid it can only get worse.
I got away with fitting new piston rings, but if its gone too far.....

I had a chimaera 500 with this problem, which had been bought from dream machines by the previous owner with the same symptoms(slight rattle under load from low revs).
They refused to acknowledge the problem.......'they all do that sir'.
I bought the car from him for not a lot of money(he was terrified it was going to go 'bang' and land him with big bills) and did some research on the problem.......it's not the end of the world and is a common problem in chevy 5.7 ls1's(google 'piston slap' and see) and causes a slight loss of compression when cold and a bit of oil consumtion. This can be minimised by using a good quality mineral 10W40, eg valvolene, and changing it every 3000 miles.
I subsequently found out that the car in question had been'cooked' on a track day, and this had probably caused a slight warping in the block. It had needed new cylinder heads, which was done at Austec, along with a hot cam, solid lifters etc, and the owner had then traded it into dream machines against another car.I got the car with 48000 on the clock.
My best mate now has it.
The problem was fixed by copious amounts of a product called 'RESTORE', which was put in by Austec during a service and after 2000 miles the rattle disappeared altogether. Full compression returned as did full power as evidenced by 308 bhp at a recent dyno session(average for a 500 is 275). The car has now done 65k and runs as well as ever. The oil is changed every 3k and 2 litres of 'Restore' are used(together with 4.5litres 10/40 mineral).
Now knowing what the symptoms are, and having driven several 'perfect' cars also which have minor symptoms of the same, I can now identify it - it would appear to be a slight characteristic of the engine type.
Anyway, try the product......it's not cheap and must be put in with fresh oil and filter.....worth it though.

Didn't seem to get much of a thumbs up from PHers. But there was a cry for someone to try it and see if it works. Go for it Sam!
Nice try!Think I`ll give it a miss......griff dont need it anyway. Just wondered why Austec had used it?

And it was mentioned early on in this thread. And I know Austec have a super reputation-who`d wanna take notice of my delirious ramblings......besides, the product evidently did a reasonable job so no name & shame ere, sir!!
