Hi Guys,

Anyone out there got any good tyre solutions for Griffiths?

As far as I can understand Toyo have stopped production of 205/55/R15s in anything above V ratings. The only possible solution I can find are Dunlop SP9000s in a 205/55/R15 W, but they don't do the matching rears.

Should I go for Toyos all round but V-rated tyres on the front, or mix Dunlops and Toyos?

Alternatively if anyone has Toyos in 205/55/R15 W or Z please let me know.

Cheers

Not wishing to be rude but a quick search (second button from the right on the top tool bar) will give you so much info on this thumbup

Look in the Chimp section as well wink

You could also speak with your insurance company & ask if they will accept the slightly lower rating, mine would, but no need now as i have 16" all round smile

ETA & welcome biggrin

I have toyo`s on the back and michellins on the fronts, and have had no problems.
providing the tyre tread patterns are the same.

Use the opportunity to change your front wheels to 16"s.

OK, so the best bet is to fit 7.5x16" rims up front is that it? On 225/45/ZR16 Toyos right? Slightly wider but nearly same overall diameter as the original 205/55/15s.

This does allow me to pose another stupid TVR-newbie question, where can I get said 7-spoke OZ rims to match the pattern of the rears?

Cheers guys

Yes 225/45ZR16s on front and 245/45ZR16s on rear is way to go.

You can only buy the 16" OZ Estorils secondhand - PH or ebay - if you look next door in the Chimaera forum you'll see Nano2nd asking advice about selling his Estorils.

Changing the front wheels isn't necessarily better as such, just that it will give you a choice of the correctly rated tyres.

Do you really mean 7 spoke OZ alloys?
I reckon they are Estorils - standard on Griffiths. In which case you will be looking for a pair of rears which you can fit on the front. They are expensive though because we are all struggling to find tyres and there aren't that many wheels around.

Estorils = 7 spoke OZ alloys

Other big advantage is that improved bigger brakes cxn be fitted.

Thanks for all the info guys.

Changing wheels may well be the long-term solution, my immediate problem is to get the car legal and imported into France. For that the car needs to be standard, big brakes, and 18" wheels aren't likely to get past the French SVA tests (I can't get hold of an EU conformity certificate for love nor money)...

Seems after more searching Yokohama might have suitable tyres:

205/55/WR15 S-drives available for the front
245/45/WR16 AVS Sports for the rear

Anyone tried that combination? WR should be okay because they're rated to 168mph.

Just to answer your original question, I have Dunlops at the front and Toyos at the rear like you were suggesting. They seem very similar tyres, I find them great, well balanced and work well with Gaz shocks I have. Warren at Topcats recommended the combination as well and he knows a thing or two.

I have just changed to toyo R888's on standard fit (ie 15/16) and found them to be excellent... try andy at TVRMonster.

worked for me. Andy runs these on the monster griff so should be able to advise.

Personally i would prefer to keep the same make on both axles but that's my opinion.

Thanks again for all the info guys. I had a look on mytyres.co.uk but no Dunlops for the back at least not in ZR. I've gone ahead and ordered Dunlops for the front and Toyos for the back. I'll report back when I've had a chanceto try them.

Cheers

I have Yokohamas on the front and Falkens on the rear, all supplied by Scole Engineering who imported some from Japan specially to solve this problem. I prefer the handling now to the old SO2s which were too hard for my liking.

I think the wear rate, which is 280 (from memory) fro both Dunlop and Toyo is the fairly important. I've got Dunlops all round on the pre cat but I will definately be putting Toyo on the rear next time.
The Dunlop front/Toyo rear combination is very good in all weathers, sticky and sure in the dry and excellent grip in the wet - 500 used daily, with Nitrons, poly bushes and a good set up.
