Pipes and Hoses..

...`Cos got a leak. Been meaning to replace for some time, now gotta see to it. Along with swirl tank (did a fairly successful bodge on it-ideally would like a replacement but where from? its an early 500 with the `preserp` style, so to speak) and sort that there bott ball joints. Would prefer to do myself but...not much time at moment and may farm out, I guess. Will buy all parts meself.
Wots bothering me is the fact that the coolant `appears` to be coming from rad (only cos its running along the bottom and dripping from the middle). Any fast and easy way to tell? Always check things out after a drive cos I`m a saddo and noticed nothing ontoward the last time (Sunday).
Lost about a quarter of a pint. Such fun.
Dave.

Dave - if you are relacing he hoses, try the ACT site. I expect they do the same as any other hose, but look the business. Replacing them is all straightforward.
For your leak, have you checked the expansion tank? Could be the cap (blue one - off a VW, fitted to most models I think I reacll, and only a few quid) or just doesn't like being too full? Mine 'adjusts' itself so that the level when cold is only about an inch in the tank. Track days and Le Mans (2005 - 35deg C) show that it runs fine. Anything over that get spat out, and could look like a leaking rad. Try a run with some tissue taped round the tank, and see?

When my radiator leaked, it was caused by the edge of one of the fibreglass fan 'trays' wearing through one of the radiator tubes. Only way to see this is to lay on the ground in front of the car and look up through the grille where you will be able to see the front of the rad., and possibly any anti-freeze stains. Also check for leaks under the thermostat housing especially if the valley gasket is rusty, as mine was. My overflow tank also runs with only about an inch of water in it. Good luck
Cheers, gents!
Yeah, dried out where coolant was sitting and ran ebgine to hot....result, rad seemed fine but coolant appears to be running down the `bodged` swirl tank and along chassis thus showing itself on the floor below rad! And yes, might a swell get silicone jobbies (hoses, not implants!).
