All other things being equal, which would you buy, one with 40K miles which has had the cam job done around 3K miles ago or one with 30K miles which has had nothing done but sounds solid?

You did say all things being equal - I would go for the car with the cam replaced. Not uncommon for the cams to die at 30k miles, or even less.

My cam was shot at 33k miles.

Efectively it's up for sale now,if somone would make me a fair offer,i just dont know what to put it up for,or in which state of tune to sell it(i have all the original bits as well).
Getting back to the op's question,if everything else was equal i'd go for the one with 30k on it,as everything mechanical has nearly 2 years more motoring left in it in terms of wear,based on the miles i do each year(5-6k)

I don't think its straight forward question, prob why the thread has attracted a few facetious postings - who me?

If I had to choose, a 'nice' cam might make a difference, but it is quite possible many components on either may have been renewed or might be shagged?? A test drive and assessment of the handling is probably the best test, but a new/sheepish prospective owner might not be confident enough a test-pilot to do this?
