I've had a nice new hood fitted to my car, but I have an issue with the struts leaving dirty grey marks when folded down.

1. Is this beacause I don't polish them enough

2. Or do latter ones (mines March 92) have some sort of finish/coating on them.

I've noticed (Bernard.... I think) has but tape on his struts where they meet screen.

Dependant on the answer I guess will sort out my solution of either polishing ( I hate cleaning cars) or aquiring latter struts.

Cheers

I would say yes to No1.
Ambersol gets them nice and clean. Also works well on the T bar opener for the doors.

I think the struts are lacquered so polishing will not help.

They are lacquered, and polishing I have found makes the situation worse as the polish removes the lacquer and then transfers a mucky grey residue to the window . .

I polish the window with Renovo plastic window restorer stuff, my Dad uses Mecguiars stuff and swears by that.

I then just keep the struts as clean as I can really . .

That explains the OP's problem, then.

I've never polished mine properly.... there is no laquer on them at all...

Looking at other early precat Griffs I don't think the stays are laquered....

From the sounds of it the latter ones are laquered......

So for a lazy pesron like me the fix is to aquire a pair of 500 struts......

make sure you don't leave your beasty unattended hehe (there is noway I'm paying £40 per strut as advertised by the breakers)..... any one breaking a latter Griff or Chim I'll give you £40 a pair.

I use a blue fine fibre towel rolled and placed within the length of the hood. This prevents the stays from touching the hood and also guards against the plastic window indenting or creasing at the stays.

bounce

This might sound obvious but i don't get creases or grease marks on the plastic panel of my hood due to driving with the back section up even when the roof panel is stored in the boot.

I find the driving sight in the rear screen is better (as long as your rear screen is not clouded.)

Just my opinion.

I remove the grey marks from my window very successfully with Bug and Tar remover.
I've also heard that once your stays are polished, if you then wax them you won't get the window marks so much. (The Polishing Co. told me at the Growl last year)

I've got a pair of seat belt pads on my stays. I got some rather nice TVR one's on ebay from here stops all marks on the screen.

If you've got marks on your windows that won't come off this stuff is excellent, Hindsight not cheap but you get loads and it really does work.
I got some 303 aerospace protectant from Mike at The Polishing Company and it's great for cleaning the rear window and makes it more supple and less prone to creasing.

I have thin foam covering the strut where it touches the screen. Over a couple of years it has not left any marks so far. Bernard.

More likely to be anodised IMO.

I find that you get more turbulence and wind noise at speed though.

I use Autosol now and again, which removes most of the grey marks easily enough.

Someone on here once said their rear screen blow out driving at high speedlike this so I have been tempted to do it myself
