Hi there
I did some work on my engine last year and replaced the sump gasket whilst I was at it.
Against some peoples advice I used a cork gasket which started leaking again - within 3 months / 500 miles.
Whipped the sump off last week to find that the whole gasket had gone hard and flaky and fallen into the sump and then got sucked into the pickup pipe mesh filter almost blocking it completely.
I'd not had any oil pressure problems but it could only have been a matter of time before it all went tits up !!!!
What should I do this time round ??? Silicone sealant ?? If so, what type ???
Any suggestions gratefully received
Cheers Andy

use any oil resistant silicon, be sure to degrease the mating faces first, apply to the sump face, give it 30 minutes to go off a little then bolt up, then give them a nip tight after a couple of hours.

went through the same problems with the cork gasket, you have to be very careful when tightening the sump back up, I feel I was a little to heavy handed.hehe

The best i have found for sump sealant is "Volkswagen Oil Pan Sealant" from any vw parts department. The stuff is white and will not separate i have removed the sump twice since using and have not had a single drop leak in 2000 miles and most importantly not 1 bit in the pick up, When silicon has been used you would usually find the odd bit in the strainer the part number is d176 404 a2 not the cheapest at 13.60 + vat !! but its cost price is 7.45 + Vat so haggle.

Thanks for the replies folks

Probably going to try the VW stuff - thanks Mark - as one of the reasons for sticking with the cork was that when I first took the sump off there was lots of silicone in the strainer - I just cant win !!!!

thanks Andy

Don't be tempted to put too much on or you'll get bits in the strainer again. The mating face of the sump is quite narrow, so doesn't need a lot.
