Dash Bulkhead Holes
Discussion
With my dash out at the moment I noticed a number of cables pass through a hole in the bulkhead to the extreme right hand side, past the steering column & just below the window demist box. I guess the hole is approximately 30-40mm diameter but doesn't have any kind of grommet or sealant or anything! Is it normal to have this hole (I guess so as wiring passes through it!), and more importantly should I have a grommet or sealant? not sure whether any water can get in from this point but it just seemed odd

I noticed a freezing draught in the winter and found a similar hole just below the steering column - but with no cables going through it. I stuck a circle of black gaffer tape over it. There's still a bit of a draught coming from somewhere but it's much better.Edited by Simpo Two on Tuesday 29th January 22:20

Yep. I'm waiting for my new dash now. Going back to walnut burr.
The Ryvita/carbon fibre thing is going in the bin. Hoorah!
The anti-ally/Leven club is taking off at last

My dash is coming out soon - any tips? Anything I should NOT do?
Ian, dont know if you have had it out before (oo errr), but use 2" masking tape to protect all around the recess where the actual dash fits.it scratches very easily.
Thanks

Are you just taking out the carbon sections Ian or the whole leather part too? I followed the Bible's advice about the masking tape, which gave me some peace of mind when removing the (stainless in my case) dash - TBH the hardest part was getting the tape to stick to the leather! AFAIK I literally did it by the book - drop steering column down (support on something from tunnel to door trim), radio & cage out, dash vents out, check for non-existent fixing at LHS of dash panel above airvent, retract dash panel slowly from the LHS whilst trying not to snag all of the masking tape on the way out!My top tips relate to the wiring. In order to power the aerial amplifier there is a small power wire from the ISO plugs to the aerial unit, which is hidden somewhere in the dash - the wire just disappears into the loom on mine I think? Unfortunately the stereo ISO sockets are wired onto the dash panel and depending on how long the aerial power wire is it could stop you withdrawing the panel fully. I got mine almost all the way out before disconnecting the lead from the ISO socket with a bent paperclip (you could cut it but there's no need - only something to go wrong in future). Once that was undone I was stuck by the footwell light wiring, which for some reason is also connected to the dash panel
. Just unclip the passenger footwell light (if you have one) and unclip the wiring or pass the whole lot up through the dash. That's your lot then, two multiplugs and it's out!In reality it takes about 30 minutes or so I reckon, maybe an hour? Not as hard as you'd think, just make sure you've protected the leather interior when you're doing it incase you need to put the panel down etc.
If you want to get the leather bit out just shout, that's not much worse but I've got some tips for that too... Ever since you pointed out my 'drumskin' dashboard recess at the Puesdown last year it's bothered me
so now I've had to sort it

Oops! Sorry, my fault.

No criticism meant mate. You've seen my shed - I can hardly fault others, especially motors as nice as yours.

Don't be deceived, it's far from perfect in my mind

They are normal, and no water is around there - as they go into the body cavities (ooerr). They do normally have blocks of foam to prevent chaffing against the f/glass on all the cars I've seen tho.
Dave
I'll fit something before reassembly if only to protect the wiring then. How many other holes should there be? I get a draught in the driver's footwell too from somewhere but haven't located it yet (the vent is closed!). Bright-light in the footwell test may help I suppose?Dave
Have you got the duct from the inner wing that supplies the fresh air vent? If some one has had the carpets back (wiring etc.) that may need resealing against the bodywork... an indication of how much air can get forced up the wings - mine is a lot nicer with restrictions and filters behind the headlight area.

Sure have, I'll have to peel back the carpet to check the seal I suppose. This would presumably also let water get in under my carpets if I'd been driving through torrential rain for a number of hours too then... that might explain why water only seems to enter after a prolonged wet run at speed, but doesn't do it any other time Dave
