I have a standard exhaust on my Griff 500 and have taken the chassis plate off to reveal the silencer. To my surprise the silencer is in bare steel with no paint. The metal is still shiny apart from a small number of rust pits/patches and appears to have been coated with a film of oil or waxoyl. Is this normal and should I just coat with more oil, engine!, to stop further rusting?

No. Now you have exposed it to the elements, the only way of preserving it is to cut it open from the top and remove all that nasty wadding and perf tube, and replace either with sleeves or cherry bombs. Otherwise it's toast wink

Hi, I've just done my exhaust which showed signs of rust, it's stainless steel grade 409 which will rust but only surface corrosion which shouldn't be an issue. I've cleaned it all up and had new perforated tube and high temp wadding >1200 C fitted to get the noise levels down to allow engine starts at night in my town, removed the bad steel sections and replaced it with small plates ss 409. 2 hrs if you have a welding set. If it's to bad get a replacement box from a breaker. You should only use high temp coats if you want to apply coating, still ss 409 doesn't need protection and therefore would leave it blank.
