shortly will be replacing exhaust manifolds, so if anyone on here has made up some spanners that enable you to tighten the bolts from above, please can you post some pics up on here, it would save me a bit of time if I could copy a shape that is proven to do the job.

thanks in advance

Just buy a cheap set of banana spanners, easiest way . . . .

Then buy a set of ARP bolts which have a smaller head and it get's even easier.

AFM pipes turned up on Friday, will fit later.

I found that you can pretty much do all the bolts with the following spanners:

- normal 14mm
- short draper 14mm for some (I got it from my local motor factors and its about 4 inches long
- offset 14mm ring spanner, I'm not sure of the technical term for this type of spanner, but it looks like a double ended ring spanner, but the ends step out by around 1.5cm if that makes any sense? This one was the most useful IIRC!

Yes, or use the S spanners that Nick talks about above. My Dad just picked a set of each from his tool guy for about £15 for both sets and did the manifold on his Chimaera from above.

Another recomendation for ARP - they are smaller and let you use a smaller spanner in those hard to reach places.. I used a small rachet spanner on mine..

Clive

I had a look at some of these when in my local fitting place picking up some stainless bits and bobs.

http://www.nord-lock.com/

They have a test rig with a wing nut you do up by hand, and then he said undo it . . I couldn't shift it at all. He had to use pliers to undo it !

I will be fitting these when I fit the ARP's, when for whatever reason I need to take the manifolds off.

They are not cheap at £7 for 10, but I they seem a lot more secure than spring washers and are available in stainless steel.

I'll get some pics of the pipe to you . ..

already have the nordlocks and the arp`s, but only use the arp bolts where access is tricky, as the standard bolts with the larger head allows you to get them tighter than the arp ones.

Quinny, you`re just a bloody show off!!yes

hehehehe

Not sure I'd want to put too much torque into the alloy heads?

but enough to seal the gaskets, which the arp ones arent the best, it is a 3/8 bolt, being tightened on a 3/8 head in the arp case instead of 9/16 in standard formyes

The ARP bolts are extremely good quality and despite the reduced head they are more than capable of ripping the threads out of the heads if you applied enough torque. The OEM bolts are nothing special.
